Today we celebrate jazz singer Sarah Vaughan (1924-1990).
Vaughn started her career at the age of 18 by winning a contest promoted by her friends. She was immediately recognized for her uniquely smooth and rich voice,

Woods (1856-1910). He was the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War.
Because he was prolific in his inventions, including technologies such as the safety circuit, telegraph, telephone, and phonograph, Woods is sometimes referred to as the Black Edison.
Over his lifetime, he received nearly 60 patents and invented 15 appliances for electric railways. His lasting legacy was a safer public transportation system for many cities in the United States.

It is not counted toward a ranking result (that affects the naming of the state team) because coaches have to submit our ranking to the NHIAA before this race. So instead of a competition, this was to be a fun night celebrating seniors.
The festivities include a dual GS where kids can ski parallel and simultaneously with their friends, seniors dressing in silly costumes, music blaring at the start, and plenty of cheering, posters, and overall support for our seniors at the finish.
This year an underclassman from Hollis Brookline had the idea to create a tunnel for the seniors to ski through at the end of the night. As we all helped to take down the course, the seniors remained at the top while the underclassman created the tunnel with skiers poles.
It was very heartwarming to see the seniors from all the schools ski through the tunnel while their peers and fellow racers from 4 schools (ConVal, Souhegan, Hollis Brookline, and Goffstown). All cheered them on.
Then at the bottom, ConVal was able to give the seniors vinyl posters and flowers to let them know how much we appreciate them and will miss them. It was a wonderful celebration.

On the boy’s side, novice skier Nathan Klonel moved far up the ranks from his first race and finished the hilly course in a very respectable twelfth place.
ConVal travels to Lebanon on Wednesday, Feb 10, for another classic race, and will host their home meet at Dublin on Saturday, Feb 13.

We were informed today of a case of COVID-19 at ConVal High School. We immediately contacted, worked with, and followed guidelines from the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (NH DHHS) to determine if any staff or students were in close contact with the infected individual.
NH DHHS defines close contact with the infected person as being within six feet for a total of ten cumulative minutes or more, beginning two days prior to first illness onset or collection of a positive test, whichever is earlier. When close contact occurs, we contact those individuals or their parent/guardian to instruct them on how to self-quarantine at home.
Thanks to the vigilance of the staff and students of ConVal High School, no individuals met the above definition of close contact, and we are able to continue our present programming at ConVal High School.
The safety of our children, employees, and community is our top priority. To ensure the health and safety of all, we have been following CDC guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting. In addition, we should all take the following precautions to prevent the spread of the disease:

Kimberly

During this time, the two high schools have grown closer through biannual exchanges in either Salzburg or Peterborough. Students who participate in the exchange routinely refer to their fellow exchange students and host families as their “family away from home.”
Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted this tradition which has proven mutually beneficial for ConVal German learners and for students from Salzburg who are interested in experiencing American culture.
Since travel is not possible at this time, the exchange has moved online. For the last several months, students from both schools have contributed to a joint blog called "Das große Abenteuer 2020" ("The Great Adventure 2020").
The blog allows them to practice their respective language skills by sharing experiences and interests in the respective target language — German for ConVal students, English for students at the Akademisches Gymnasium in Salzburg.
For details, see the blog here.
