Principal Heather McKillop announces the ConVal Regional High School math department will be providing a new opportunity for timely and targeted support for Algebra 1 students starting next week.
Starting Monday, December 7, students in both Part 1 and Part 2 of Algebra 1 will be able to attend support sessions that will be held remotely after school from 3-5 pm Monday through Friday. The sessions, which will consist of roughly three to five students, will be between half an hour to an hour, and led by math faculty familiar with the course and content.
Students will be sent invitations and a form to RSVP and sessions will begin the following week. Students will be invited based on a weekly assessment covering recent materials.
Though the invitations will come from their specific math teacher, students may attend sessions led by other math teachers.
“This personalized learning opportunity shows just how dedicated our teachers are to providing our students with the best possible learning experience,” Principal McKillop said. “Thank you for all who organized this opportunity and resource.”
Those with questions may contact Mathematics Department head Lance Flamino at lflamino@conval.edu or your student’s Algebra 1 teacher.

Following the segmented school calendar that was approved by the ConVal School Board over the summer, ConVal High School will transition to remote instruction following the Thanksgiving holiday. Remote instruction will be in place until the day after the Martin Luther King Jr holiday in January 2021.

I am writing this afternoon to remind anyone planning on participating in a winter sport that our skills and drills/conditioning period will begin on Monday, December 7.
Congratulations to senior Cale Skillings who recently earned his welder qualification record in E7018 stick, unlimited thickness, all positions, structural and structural bridge.
The E7018 classification refers to the low-hydrogen, usually DC, all-position electrode that is used when quality is an issue or for hard-to-weld metals. It has the capability of producing more uniform weld metal, which has better impact properties at temperatures below zero.
According to instructor Dan Guillou, this test is one of the hardest for welders to pass, and many people fail several times before being successful.
Cale attempted the test this past spring and did not succeed on his first attempt. However, he persevered, came back for more practice, and passed with an almost flawless test — an A+ according to Guillou.
Cale’s next steps are an ELO at American Steel, where he will continue to refine his skills. Well done, Cale!
ConVal High School's Community Fund recently issued a $400 donation to the Grand Monadnock Rotary Club in support of its annual Operation Santa.
In her communication to Club President Harry Wolhandler, Jen Kiley explained how the money for the donation was raised: "Our teachers have donated money for the past two months on our 'Jeans Thursdays' to go toward helping local families have a brighter holiday season."
ATC Director Jen Kiley, English teacher Liz Moore, and Mathematics teacher Amanda Hinton jointly lead the Community Fund at ConVal Regional High School.
The Grand Monadnock Rotary Club (Club #6464) is dedicated to community service, with a special focus on youth development and health advocacy for people of all ages, locally, and internationally.
Club #6464 serves the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. It was chartered as a new club on July 1, 2020 following the merger of the Monadnock and Peterborough Rotary Clubs. The Peterborough chapter has a long history dating back to 1925 when the Peterborough Rotary was started.
Students in the Firefighting I class had the opportunity to participate in a side-by-side controlled burn demonstration at the New Hampshire Fire Academy and Fire Marshal’s Office on Wednesday, November 18, in Concord.
Students observed first-hand a live burn exhibit that demonstrated the importance of fire sprinklers, especially during the holiday season. The message was that even artificial trees pose a significant fire hazard, especially those that have not been rated by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL). The burn was featured that evening on WMUR during the nightly news.
The students also met and had a Q&A session with NH State Fire Marshal Paul Parisi, District Chief Danielle Cole, District Chief Adam Fanjoy, Investigator Matt Wilmot, and the accelerant canine “Anthem.” Anthem was then run through some training exercises in detecting ignitable liquids.
Ms. Muncy's Biology class, which is made up mostly of sophomores and juniors, were led remotely through a lab that involved the dissection of a crayfish.
The aim of the lab was for students to work independently or in pairs in order to achieve a greater understanding of the invertebrate through hands-on dissection and exploration of crustacean anatomy.
With Chromebook cameras trained on the lab trays, Ms. Muncy guided students through all the parts of the lab which started with the examination of the exoskeleton of the crayfish and progressed through the use of straight and bent teasing needles to identify other external structures of the crayfish and finally the use of dissecting scissors to lay bare and identify the specimen's internal organs.
To document their progress, students took photos with their smartphones before turning in their lab reports. The photos of crayfish anatomy will also be used to do a comparative anatomy assignment where students will compare a crayfish and a starfish.
