Lunch Time Is Opera Time In The ConVal Cafeteria

Three singers and a pianist created a surprise opera flash mob in ConVal’s cafeteria on Tuesday. The experience is a new opera outreach project from the Colonial Theatre in Keene which aims to expose and educate people on the world of opera music.

The singers posed as kitchen and maintenance staff and pretended to be working in the cafeteria while students entered for lunch.  The students might’ve suspected that something was up due to the presence of an upright piano right in the middle of the cafeteria. Once most of the students were through the lunch line and seated, the five-minute scene began.

The singers dueled and competed for attention with excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen and Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. They eventually join forces to end with the famous trio from Verdi’s La Traviata. After the performance, the musicians engaged with students to discuss what they just saw and heard!

To follow up on this experience, Ms. Morin will be utilizing some of the Metropolitan Opera’s educational resources in her choral ensembles to discuss opera music in our world today.
