[post_content] => The first challenge in the ConVal Regional High School Applied Technology Center Engineering Lab was the Dyson Cardboard Chair.
Each year, the James Dyson Foundation hosts high school brain-teasing challenges that engage students in STEM concepts. The challenge was to design and build a chair from only cardboard materials.
Engineering teacher Karen Fabianski was impressed to see this group's model and final product. "Their chair is both sturdy and elegant," Fabianski said. "What’s most important is that this group worked together in a team format to design and build the product."
The James Dyson Foundation was started by its founder in 2002. It is dedicated to encouraging young people to think differently, invent, prototype, make mistakes, and realize their engineering potential with a real-life product.

[post_content] => Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you’ll ever do. Not to mention, one of the most fulfilling. You have the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering them to achieve. And the best part is, it’s actually a lot of fun. You and your Little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do.
Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies. Or just give some advice and inspiration. Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you’ll enjoy them even more with your Little—and you’ll be making a life-changing impact.
Volunteering just a few hours a month with a child can start something amazing. So why not apply to be a Big today. There are kids out there ready to get started. Are you?
Think you want to be a Big Brother/Big Sister? Learn more at the special TASC talk on October 3.

[post_content] => ConVal's music teachers Jim Wickham and Krystal Morin delivered a guest lecture at Keene State as part of the college's Music Education Guest Lecture Series.
Their presentation, "Google Apps in Music Classrooms," explored the ways in which regular technology tools that are contained in the G Suite for Education can be uniquely adapted to assist in the teaching of band and chorus ensembles and how they can personalize student learning opportunities.
Dr. Sandra A. Howard, Chair of the Keene State Music Department, wrote after the presentation to thank Morin and Wickham for the guest lecture, which had resulted from an invitation that was issued after seeing the duo present at the New Hampshire Music Educators Association's All-State Conference in April.
"The topics addressed in your presentation align with technology use and curriculum development that our students are considering as they enter the teaching profession. The assortment of examples and teaching applications provided attendees with ideas and experiences on how they can establish a positive and inclusive learning environment for students in both ensembles and a general music setting."
"We are proud to collaborate with individuals like you who are eager to share expertise and experiences with our pre-service educators," Dr. Howard concluded. "I look forward to our continued collaboration and the opportunity to learn from your work again in the future."

[post_content] => As part of the statewide “New Hampshire Tackles Hunger” campaign, ConVal High School is partnering with our football team and WMUR in a concerted effort to help stock up local food pantries. Hunger and food insecurity are very real problems in our communities.
According to the latest statistics, about 13% of children are living in food insecure environments, meaning they do not know where their next meal will come from.
Please encourage your student to contribute some non-perishable food to this very important effort. Several items are of particular need, including peanut butter, jelly, tuna, soups, pasta, sauce and canned fruits and vegetables. Please, do not bring food in glass containers.
Food donations will be accepted in the main office and the main hallway of ConVal.
Several ConVal teams got a headstart and went shopping to get the food collection started. Last year, nearly 1,650 lbs in food donations and about $1,310 in cash were collected.
