[post_content] => The theme for this year's Children and the Arts Festival is "A Pirate's Life for Me."
On Wednesday, students from Mrs. Seale's fourth-grade class at Francestown Elementary School and students from ConVal High School collaborated on creating a pirate-themed story in Ms. Vanat's English classroom. The collaboration was inspired by District Arts Integration Coordinator Jeannie Connolly.
Together, the students did some prewriting exercises that explored famous pirate characters from literature and film, the lives that they have been portrayed as leading, the types of ships on which they sailed, and the activities in which they engaged. Also part of the lesson was a lesson in geography, such as naming the world's major oceans. After the pre-writing assignments, the students worked in pairs or small groups to write and illustrate their stories.
The Peterborough Children and the Arts Festival will take place on May 19. For program details, please see the organization's website at childrenandthearts.org.

[post_content] => Today is Teacher Appreciation Day, part of Teacher Appreciation Week which is held during the first full week in May of each year.
We all recognize that teachers play a critical role in educating and shaping the students who are the future leaders of our country, and this is our opportunity to say: "Thanks!"
At ConVal Regional High School, teachers and staff were treated to cake in the main office. The treat came as a "thank you" for the complex, and often difficult, work they accomplish every day in molding all of our students' lives in a positive direction.
If you have not done so already, be sure to thank a teacher today!

[post_content] => Ben Putnam, head of the ConVal Art Department, meets informally with one of his students to share the narrative feedback that is included on the student's report card for the third quarter.
The narratives balance observations on the student's successes as well as considerations for improvement in class. Also included in the feedback is the student's progress on ConVal High School's 21st century skills.
Report cards are handed to students in print form during TASC so they can be shared with parents and guardians at home.

[post_content] => Social Studies teacher Olivia Bregani and Art teacher Ben Putnam took eleven students on a tour of France over April vacation to experience the art and architecture of Europe's most visited country.
The group toured a number of cities, including Paris, Avignon, Marseille, Nîmes, and Nice.
On the way, the students saw:
the Eiffel tower which originally served as the entrance to the 1889 Paris World's Fair,
the Cathedral of Notre Dame on Paris' Île de la Cité,
the mile-long Avenue des Champs-Élysées,
the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile, and
the city's Roman ruins.
The group saw the art work displayed in the Musée du Louvre, which was established in 1793 and is the world's largest art museum. Additional museum explorations included the Musée d'Orsay on the left bank, the Orangerie du Château de Versailles, as well as the Musée Matisse and the Musée Marc Chagall in Nice.

[post_content] => Registration is now open for the 2018 Summer Academy which will be held July 9 – August 2, 2018.
The Academy is a great way to extend student learning through the summer to prevent the usual “summer slide” — the traditional loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of the summer holidays. Taking ConVal Summer Academy courses also helps to get requirements and electives out of the way so that your student's class schedule can remain flexible and open to opportunities during the regular school year.
The Academy offers participation in a musical drama production, art instruction in ceramics, metalsmithing and jewelry making, a class on history through graphic novels, and a course in forensic science, just to mention some of the most popular selections.
In addition, the Academy offers credit recovery and readiness courses in Mathematics as well as regular courses (e.g. American Government, American Economics) that can be accomplished on a concentrated time schedule.
Attendance in the Summer Academy is free for students of the ConVal School District, including incoming freshmen. All that is required is a $50 deposit for attending a class, a fee that is refunded upon completion of the course.
New this year, there are two day-long workshops organized by the New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation (NHHEAF), one specializing in the college admissions process, the other concentrating on the college admissions essay.
For further details, please see this course description and signup brochure or email John Reitnauer with questions.

[post_content] => Scully Architects/Nextstage Design recently presented new conceptual architectural design ideas to the Fill the Void Board. Architects Dan Scully and Dave Drasba, and theater designer Tony Forman, have assessed the performance needs of students, ConVal High School educators, and local performing arts organizations as determined by Fill the Void’s research.
The new, preliminary design concept accommodates multiple configurations, ranging from intimate, small-scale performances for small audiences to musicals or concerts playing to the 400-seat full house.
The adaptable space, as proposed, can serve many functions:
Concert Hall
Proscenium Theater
Black Box Theater
Folkway Concert
Dance
Thrust Stage Theater
Theater in the Round
Alternate Theater configurations
Traditionally, attending the theater has been a passive experience. In this time of cultural change, there is an increasing move toward participation, where attendees are active in the creation of (and reaction to) the event. This shift calls for a space flexible enough to facilitate a variable range of engagement from audiences. At the same time, this flexibility must be not only affordable but also logistically achievable, or the space will not seamlessly adapt from one configuration to another. Departing from traditional designs that are rigidly constructed solely for proscenium arch presentations, the new concept drawings represent a versatile theatre for the future, a gathering place for the community to participate in arts and cultural events. The facility is envisioned as an arts and culture hub, supporting an array of programs that will inspire and educate students and the public, and will help prepare young people for creative work and active engaged lives in the 21st century.
Fill the Void will soon revisit local arts organizations, educators, and the school board to share the preliminary conceptual sketches, to ensure alignment of mutual needs and goals before moving toward more advanced architectural designs.
Link here for more about Scully/Architects and Nextstage Design.

[post_content] => Rallies at ConVal High School are always a great opportunity to show school spirit, and this year's rally before April break continued this proud tradition.
Students wore their class T-shirts (freshmen - red, sophomores - black, juniors - white, and seniors - blue).
Classes really got into the competitions which included a pie eating contest, wheelbarrow races, a hula hoop competition, and a tug of war.
The spirit rally closed with a short concert by the ConVal High School faculty band (Ken Cloutier, Robin Kennedy, Brock Lambert, Mark Tazelaar, Mike Wozmak).
Happy April vacation, everyone!

[post_content] => Thanks to an intraschool loan from the Region 14 Applied Technology Center (ATC), the engineering department's Ultimaker 3D printer is currently on display in the ConVal Library Learning Commons.
The printer is programmed by using the Cura application that supports three-dimensional modeling and uses polyamide (nylon) filament as the print medium.
The Ultimaker has two camera views which allow onlookers to see live what is currently being printed. So far, the printer has created a model of a human heart and a hand.
