[post_content] => On Monday, February 19th, Select Choir members participated in a workshop with Ade and Tommy Monareh on Indonesian music.
The ConVal choirs are currently preparing a program of choral music titled "Island Songs". Three of our school choirs are each learning traditional songs from different island nations. Throughout this process, students have engaged in learning about the geography, history and culture this music comes from. Select choir is studying three choral pieces from Indonesia, "Siksik si Batu Mannikkam" and "Soleram" which are both from the island of Sumatra, and "Nuru ai Pani" from Papua.
Ade and Tommy shared about Indonesian culture and musical traditions, coached the singers on their pronunciation, shared stories of their childhood in Jakarta and brought along their Angklung for the students to play.
The Angklung is a traditional Indonesian instrument made from bamboo. The students performed the melody to the piece popular song, Soleram, which they are currently learning an arrangement of.
ConVal Choirs will present their annual spring on Tuesday, March 20th at 7:00 pm in the Hancock Congregational Church.

[post_content] => Students in Ms. Gagnon's Psychology class recently created Augmented Reality (AR) files to present connections related to famous psychologists.
The blended learning assignment, "Connections throughout the history of psychology," asked students to research a psychological theorist of their choice. Students then used their findings to create 3-minute videos. The videos reviewed key facts about the psychologists, explained their systematic approaches to understanding human behavior, and reviewed the theorists' influences on the field of psychology.
Both the Technology rubric and the Public Speaking rubric were used to assess the students' 21st-century skills that were embedded in the assignment.
Using the HP Reveal app on iPads, students used pictures of the psychologists as "trigger images." The photos triggered the superimposed research videos related to the psychologists. This gave each student an opportunity to explore all the other theorists that had been studied and to determine possible connections between them.
Responding to the guiding question: "How have psychologists been connected to build what we see today as the science of psychology?" students then created a mandala that illustrated the connections and influences of psychological thinkers, as well as their respective strengths.
At the end of the assignment, Ms. Gagnon remarked: "I loved integrating technology and non-digital learning to meet the needs of all students. No matter where they are with both academic and technical skills, this blended learning assignment met all the students' learning expectations. And it was fun!"

[post_content] => ConVal High School is excited to welcome the Class of 2022. We are eager to meet the members of the new freshman class and look forward to working with them on their class selections.
The first step in the transition from middle school to high school will begin with student meetings in February. On Tuesday, February 13, the high school counselors will begin working with the Great Brook and South Meadow eighth graders on selecting courses for next year. Independent school students are invited to the ConVal High School on Friday, February 16 at 9:30 am for an information session. Please RSVP to Kim Chandler at kchandler@conval.edu.
An informational night for parents and guardians is scheduled for Monday, February 19, 2018, at 6:30 pm at ConVal High School. This program is for parents and guardians only.

For two hours, students gave presentations and explained classroom projects, internships, and extended learning opportunities that involved project-based learning. They demonstrated work they had completed in subjects as diverse as art, entrepreneurship, child growth and development, ceramics, engineering, English, film music scoring, graphic design, history, mathematics, physics, robotics, science and world languages. Stations included, among many others, 3D body scanning, architecture displays, augmented reality-enhanced presentations in English, computer tablet drawing with a live model, Q&A sessions about internships with area businesses and organizations, a remote-controlled wheelchair, student-created websites, poetry recitations in German and Spanish, woodshop projects, and the performance of the Macbeth-based comedy "Danes of Our Lives." Students who have enrolled in a Virtual Learning Academy Charter School (VLACS) course this semester meet with librarians Ashley Jones and Rachael Bowman for an orientation.
VLACS is an online public high school that affords students the opportunity to enroll in courses that might not fit into their regular schedules or that allow them to explore special learning interests.
Sister Juanita Durgin, RN, American Red Cross instructor for the combined ConVal and Conant High School Certified Nurse Assistant Training Program, conducted a graduation ceremony for the eight students who completed the CNA training program during the second quarter.
