The Peterborough Rotary Club hosted ConVal Special Education Teacher Deb Riley at the meeting on Monday, August 21. Riley shared an update with the Club about the Youth Mental Health First Aid regional initiative made available by the Monadnock System of Care. Riley is pictured with Peterborough Rotary Club President Steve Kim.
The Monadnock Region System of Care Project is a regional initiative focused on improving the emotional and behavioral health needs of children/youth and their families funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Youth Mental Health First Aid equips teachers, parents, and caregivers with the skills they need to identify and reach out to a young person who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use problem. Riley is one of fourteen trainers within the Monadnock region.
Young people can face a variety of mental health conditions, and knowing how to recognize and provide assistance tailored to the individual’s needs is important.
On August 17, William Harris came to ConVal to present his Make That Change motivational speech in front of an audience of nearly 600 athletes, parents and coaches. Harris is a 1978 Basketball All-American who has presented all over the United States.
For additional details about Harris' message which encourages students to maximize the team experience, please see his website www.makethatchangevt.com.

[post_content] => At the beginning of August, ConVal's Cindi Hodgdon took advantage of a professional development opportunity and participated in "Deutsche Woche," a week-long immersion conference for teachers of German from around the nation. Hodgdon was a discussion leader on the topic of "Backward Design and Integrated Performance Assessments in a Standards-Based German Curriculum."
The topics that are being discussed at Deutsche Woche are always geared towards immediate classroom use, such as:
creating effective integrated performance assessments (IPAs) for interpretive, interpersonal and presentational communicative tasks;
discussing the role that technology can play in standards-based teaching and assessment; and
analyzing existing curricula in German instructional programs in schools K-16.
In addition to Frau Hodgdon, veterans of the German program at ConVal will also recognize former ConVal German teacher Herr Colin Ashby in the photographs.
"Deutsche Woche" is organized every year by the Maine Chapter of American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) and is held on the campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, ME. In addition to the intensive work devoted to developing strategies for the learning and appreciation of German language and culture, there are also a few opportunities to engage in unstructured activities, such as exploring Acadia National Park and kayaking.

[post_content] => ATC teacher Sarah Grossi attended the three-day NH Educators' Summer Summit this week. You can follow Mrs. Grossi tweets from the conference @SarahGrossi3.
The picture shows Mrs. Grossi with Daniel Willingham, author of When Can You Trust the Experts?: How to Tell Good Science from Bad in Education, a common sense guide for parents, teachers, administrators, and policymakers which offers them the tools they need to ask tougher questions, think more logically about why an intervention program might or might not work, and ultimately make more informed decisions.
The New Hampshire Educators’ Summer Summit is an annual event where school teams convene for three days to engage in professional development with national and local experts. Now in its sixth year, the NH Statewide Summer Summit seeks to transform education through community involvement and evidence-based reform practices.
Through scholarship and mentorship in effective skills, strategies, and practices to implement with students, the Summit gives local practitioners power to transform education and provides technical assistance for sustainability. School-based teams develop and submit an innovation plan, based on gaps in performance data, as a prerequisite to attendance.
Throughout the year, on-site facilitation, tri-annual reviews, and quarterly meetings to build capacity for change support implementation of activities to achieve identified outcomes.
