Diagnosing Hardware Issues Is A Fundamental Skill

Networking classes in ConVal’s Region 14 Applied Technology Center begin with the fundamentals. Students learn how to successfully disassemble and reassemble personal computers while identifying the function and operation of individual components such as disk drives, video controllers, power supplies, and motherboards.

Identifying exactly which hardware component is failing is the first step towards successful problem-solving. This initial decision determines which repair strategy is most appropriate.  In this case, it appears that the laptop’s hard drive has malfunctioned.  What is yet undetermined is whether this happened on account of a physical issue, such as overheating, power surge, or mechanical failure, or if the malfunction is due to a really bad virus that rendered the hard disk unusable.

Diagnosis: More testing needs to be done before a repair can be effected.
