Students in two of Ms. Hodgdon’s German classes celebrated their runner-up placement in the “Bundesliga Total!” contest. The competition was organized by the Goethe Institut, Germany’s worldwide cultural institute, in collaboration with German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
Every month over the course of the soccer season, twenty international teams watched a short video of the highlights of a Bundesliga game (“Match of the Month”) and answered questions about the game and the video. Teams received points for all correct answers. After each round, the updated standings were posted on the Goethe Institut’s Step into German website.
The team with the highest point total at the end of the season was declared the championship team. ConVal’s team — the “New Hampshire Faultiere” — lost by a single point to a team from Marietta, Georgia.
The teams with the highest scores received Bundesliga team jerseys and autographs of Bundesliga players; all participating teams were awarded soccer-related prizes.
Cindi Hodgdon’s students received an official, autographed German soccer jersey by Bayer Leverkusen star player Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. Congratulations to all!
