The YMCAs of New Hampshire held the first weekend in their annual New Hampshire Youth & Government Program.
This year’s event involved 300 students from 29 schools statewide. The motto of the YMCA Youth & Government Program is “Democracy must be learned by each generation.”
The program celebrates its 70th year this year and gives high school students the opportunity to learn first-hand about state government through two weekends that are held in March and April.
The Pre-Legislative Election Day was held on Saturday, March 17th. During the Pre-Legislative election, the following students were elected to key offices:
Youth Governor Lauren Cavignano Trinity High School
Senate President Kaia Beckerman Timberlane High School
House Speaker Anna McGuiness ConVal Regional High School
Chief Justice Samara St. John Trinity High School
Editor in Chief Lily Pelkey-Jacobson Kearsarge Regional High School
The final phase of the program, the Model Legislature, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 6-7, in Concord, NH. During the two-day model legislature, delegates will discuss and debate some 128 bills they have prepared as part of the program.
