Senior Michael Zrzavy is the recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award for completing over 130 hours of volunteer community service in one year’s time.
Most of Zrzavy’s volunteer work was completed with the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) leadership organization. HOBY is dedicated to training and nurturing the young leaders of tomorrow. Its mission is to provide lifelong leadership development opportunities that empower youth to achieve their highest potential.
“This came as an unexpected but very meaningful surprise to me,” said Zrzavy. “I did it to give back to the community, but being recognized by the President is a once-in-a-lifetime honor.”
The letter of recognition from President Barack Obama, which accompanied the award, reads in part: “While government can open more opportunities for to serve our communities, it is up to each of us to seize those opportunities. Thank you for your devotion to service and for doing all you can to shape a better tomorrow for our great Nation.”
