Break The Silence 5K Brings Together Students, Teachers, Staff, Community

The third annual Break the Silence 5k run/walk for suicide prevention awareness was held at ConVal High School on May 22. The event was co-founded by students Abbey Shumway and Callie Boisvert and raises money for the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention.

All run/walk participants who donated $20 or more received bright green T-shirts and there was a great raffle thanks to donations from local businesses. $2,000 of the $5,000 fundraising goal was achieved through online donations before the run/walk even started. All funds benefit the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention which is now an official sponsor of the event.

“I am so proud of the dedicated hard work Abbey and Callie accomplish each year to raise awareness for this important cause,” said Principal Heather McKillop who participated in the walk. “The event was a wonderful opportunity to show support for ‘breaking the silence’ and de-stigmatizing mental health issues,” added Assistant Superintendent Dr. Ann Forrest who completed the run, representing the SAU.
