[post_content] => Congratulations to ConVal Art teacher Mary Goldthwaite whose work has been selected to be on display at the Aviary Gallery during the month of February. The exhibit's title is “Guided By (Female) Voices.”
Ms. Goldthwaite's medium is the art of cut paper, or "Scheerenschnitte." According to Wikipedia, Scheerenschnitte is an art form with a long tradition. It is rooted in folk practices in Switzerland and Germany in the 16th century and was brought to Colonial America in the 18th century by immigrants who settled primarily in Pennsylvania. Scherenschnitte were traditionally made by women and used as valentines, thank you notes, or greeting cards.
Ms. Goldthwaite's work puts a new twist on the tradition, one that makes it thoroughly contemporary — and women-centered in a different way. "Guided By (Female) Voices is a kind of self-portrait and acknowledgment of the women I most admire," Goldthwaite said. "This body of work began late in 2016 when I was feeling completely inundated with the constant onslaught of negativity that was being directed towards women."
"I started making cut paper portraits of creative women that I admire: Nancy Spero, Yoko Ono, Zadie Smith, Alma Thomas, The Guerilla Girls. I took 9 of these portraits and made an edition of 50 posters to sell at Broke: The Affordable Arts Fair, which I have been organizing since early 2008. I sold all 50 posters in a day and donated $500 to Planned Parenthood. At the end of the day, something that I made helped me to make a positive action that I could not have otherwise."
"I have spent 2017 dedicated to making portraits of women whom I admire, and the women who have helped to make me who I am today. As the project has worn on, I have expanded beyond looking solely at the famous artists and writers, and have focused more on celebrating the people in my life who embody qualities that I admire and inspire me."
The Aviary Gallery is located at 48 South St, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130. For more details on the exhibit and opening hours, please see the Aviary Gallery events page on Facebook.

[post_content] => Peterborough Fire Chief Ed Walker was recognized as a New Hampshire Scholars Champion during a breakfast ceremony at the Manchester Country Club on December 6, 2017.
The “Breakfast of Champions: Celebrating School Business Partnership” event was sponsored by the New Hampshire Department of Education, Unitil, BAE Systems, and NH Learning Initiative. It brought together businesses, educators, and legislators to discuss emerging trends in workforce development.
The keynote address was given by the Honorable John Lynch, former Governor of New Hampshire. Awards were presented by Dr. Patty Lynott, President, Southern New Hampshire University, and Tom Raffio, President/CEO, Northeast Delta Dental.
Awards were presented to community leaders who exemplify outstanding business education partnerships and have a decisive impact on student success. Chief Walker was recognized for his commitment to advancing partnerships dedicated to student success through his contributions to the new Fire Academy Program at ConVal, his work with the Substance Abuse Task Force, Youth Mental Health First Aid, and the Peterborough Rotary Club.
Many Career and Technical Centers in New Hampshire offer Fire Sciences programs to help communities prepare young people to enter this field. In January 2016, it was announced that the Fire Science program serving students in the ConVal, Conant, Mascenic, Milford and Wilton-Lyndeborough communities would no longer be offered. When the program was defunded, the opportunity to train young men and women prior to joining departments as firefighters and emergency medical responders was lost, adding to the already critical shortage of trained firefighters and emergency medical service personnel in our area. After learning about the cancellation of the Mascenic Fire Science program, Chief Walker wasted no time in contacting ConVal regarding the possibility of Region 14 and the ConVal School District offering a new Fire Science program.
Walker was instrumental in helping bring the Fire Science program to Peterborough. He reached out to the Monadnock Area Fire Chiefs’ Association to get their support, presented to the ConVal School Board, and met with the Peterborough Select Board to approve a donation of equipment to the program. Most recently, Ed worked with representatives from Mount Wachusett Community College and arranged an articulation agreement with their Fire Science Technology program. This means that Region 14 ATC Fire Science students can now earn college credit for their coursework.
Chief Walker is also a member of the ConVal Substance Abuse Task Force. This group consists of key stakeholders within the school district and greater Monadnock community interested in supporting young people with good behavior choices around substance use. This group is focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), building awareness on the connection to substance use, the impact on parents and children in our community, and taking action to support these children as they move toward adulthood. Chief Walker is very involved with the group since he joined two years ago and provides a valuable perspective on the dangers of substance use. He has attended many community awareness programs designed to educate the community. He has also become a trainer for Mental Health First Aid and has provided many school and community members with this valuable training and tools to use with students.
Walker's commitment to students and his professionalism, organization, and follow-through have positively contributed to our school climate. It was largely his efforts that brought Project Crash to ConVal which was one of the most powerful programs we have ever hosted at the high school.
Congratulations, Chief Walker, on this prestigious award!

[post_content] => Congratulations to ConVal's German rap trio "Kussecht" who won first place at the Goethe Institute Boston Hip-Hop Battle!
On November 30th, ConVal High School sent two teams to compete at the Boston Hip-Hop Battle against teams from all over New England. Students studied German hip hop in class and then created original raps in German on the topic of "ich" (me).
Early in November, ConVal held a preliminary Hip-Hop Battle in front of peers, from which two teams were chosen to compete at the Boston Hip-Hop Battle. The two teams were "Krankenwagen" (Rachel Cass, Anna Gombas, Bronwyn Tyler-Wall, Daisy Young, and Finn Wegmueller) and "Kussecht" (Grace Christensen, Alexis Cleary, and Margot Kratzenberg).
The teams spent the day in workshops with hip-hop artists from Berlin. In the workshops, the teams received feedback from the German rap artist Falco and upped their dance game in sessions with different hip-hop dancers from Berlin. The Berlin hip-hop artists and representatives from Goethe Institute Boston served as the judges for the final Hip-Hop Battle competition. Students were judged on the quality of lyrics, pronunciation, originality, performance, enthusiasm, and cooperation in the workshops.
In the end, Kussecht was victorious, earning first place. As the winners, Kussecht has won a professional recording of their rap and will be visiting the recording studio in a few weeks.

[post_content] => "I was totally surprised when I saw my teammates, parents, coaches, and [Athletic Director] Mark Swasey in the room," said Lily Sheridan, as she described the beginning of the signing ceremony for her athletic scholarship with Central Connecticut State University. Sheridan was recruited by CCSU to play on the Blue Devils lacrosse team in the fall of 2018.
"There was a big packet with a lot of papers in a number of folders. In the end, I was required to sign in just a few places," Sheridan continued. "After I was done signing, everyone clapped. It is a big relief for me to be committed to a great program."
The CCSU women's lacrosse team is not only a strong athletic contender in its conference, it also has a proven academic track record. In the spring of 2017, the team was recognized with IWLCA Zag Sports academic honors. CCSU was named an Academic Honor Squad, with four seniors being named to the Academic Honor Roll. In order to be named an IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad, a program must attain a 3.0 or higher team GPA for the academic year. The Blue Devils have earned the honor for three consecutive seasons.
"After the official ceremony, we had a lot of fun," Sheridan concluded. "We all had cake — really good cake!"

The team as a whole played their best defensive game of the year, shutting out a very physical Blue Hawks Unified Soccer team. Every player contributed to the final victory.
ConVal finished the season with a record of 9-0. They upset in the finals an Exeter team that had not lost a game in 3 years and were coming off back-to-back State Championships.

Sophomore Jadyn Vaidya has been selected as one of just 14 students nationwide to take part in the final round of the International German Olympiad.
Jadyn will be traveling to Illinois to participate in the national final round which will be held at the Goethe Institut in Chicago on December 1 and 2. The 14 national finalists will compete to solve tasks in the style of an “Olympic pentathlon” that tests listening skills, reading skills, writing, creativity, and presentation. A cultural program that includes a visit to the "Christkindlmarkt" and a scavenger hunt in Chicago's German district are also planned.
After the competition, the two best “Olympic athletes” will be chosen to represent the United States in the International German Olympics in Freiburg in the summer of 2018. The International German Olympiad (Internationale Deutscholympiade, IDO) is the largest German language contest in the world.
Viel Glück, Jadyn, on your competition at the national finals, and congratulations to Frau Concannon for preparing Jadyn for the contest!

[post_content] => The ConVal A Cappella Groups attended The Voices of the 603 festival on Friday, October 27th.
As part of this festival, the students come together at the Capital Center for the Arts in Concord, NH for a morning of workshops, rehearsal and then an adjudicated evening performance.
During the morning workshops, students had the option to attend classes on arranging music, stage presence, and choreography, beatboxing, working with microphones, body mapping and more. They also had the opportunity to perform for Ball and the House (a professional Boston-based a cappella group) and receive one-on-one coaching and feedback on their performance.
During the evening portion, the students perform two songs for adjudicators in a concert that also features university a cappella groups, various other choirs from around the state of NH and a performance by Ball in the House. The Morin Tune a cappella group received a silver rating and The Clef Hangers received a gold rating for their performance.

[post_content] => ConVal Art Teacher Ben Putnam was awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grant by DAR State Regent Wendy Stanley Jones at the high school faculty meeting on Wednesday.
Sponsored by the Mary Varnum Platts-Peterborough Chapter NSDAR, Putnam was one of fifty-one awards given nationally to classroom teachers for a proposed classroom project. Putnam’s project is for advanced ceramics students to work with a large wood burning kiln at the New Hampshire Institute of Art at the Sharon Arts Center.
“To have wood kilns available for general public participation is rare. I only know of two in New England,” said Putnam. “For high school students to have the opportunity to fire a wood kiln is very rare, and I don’t know of a more innovative way to teach about the interconnectedness of ceramic geology, chemistry, physics, history and art. This is a real-world application opportunity to develop students' capacity to work collaboratively in the making of work, loading and firing of a very special kiln. These lessons cannot be taught in this particular way outside of this unique opportunity.”
Jones presented Putnam with a certificate and a check for $500 to be used toward the project.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution founded in 1890, is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. The National Junior Membership committee was created in 1937 with the purpose to train younger DAR members and help them to gain leadership experience to carry out the work of the National Society. The Helen Pouch Memorial Fund was created in 1938 with the primary goal to support education. Since its inception, the fund has awarded annual scholarships and supported educational projects at the DAR schools. In an effort to expand the impact of the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund, the committee has established the classroom grant project with the goal of awarding a $500 classroom grant to one classroom in each state, totaling $25,000 in grant awards each year.
Applicants for the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grants must be classroom teachers for grades kindergarten through 12th grade and sponsored by a local DAR chapter. Proposed projects must directly benefit students in the classroom. Funds may be used for supplies and educational programs but the applicant must detail how these items will help to further the educational goals of the DAR.
