The New Hampshire Scholars Initiative is an effort by area business and school volunteers to motivate all high school students to complete a defined, rigorous academic course of study that prepares them for a smooth transition to higher-level college or university coursework or alternatively, to complete vocational and technical training to become successful in today’s competitive job market.
Congratulations to the following German 1 students who took the rigorous, two-day National German Level 1 Exam in April. The results were announced May 17.
Although the students had not had any German in three and a half months, they still scored well on the national level. Congrats to Thomas Flynn, the winner of a Bronze Award, as well as Olivia Michaels, Addie Regis, and Ella Stultz who each received an Achievement Award.
The National German Exam is administered each year to over 20,000 high school students of German. The exam is comprised of 100 multiple-choice questions divided into two parts with 50 questions each. The listening and viewing portion is 40 minutes in length and consists of a series of short audio and video segments. The reading portion is 45 minutes in length and consists of a variety of print texts, including graphs and images. All materials used in the exam come from authentic resources.
On May 16, the German and Spanish National Honor Society induction ceremonies were conducted in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre.

Congratulations to senior Nick Squatrito (ConVal Boys Lacrosse) who was voted the Sentinel Player of the Week for the week spanning April 24-30. Squatrito received 37 percent of the vote.
The Cougars got a pair of wins, returning to .500 at 3-3 with a three-game winning streak, thanks in large part to their captain goaltender. Squatrito made 20 stops in a 6-2 win over Keene on April 25 and 26 stops against Windham in an 8-6 win on April 28.
Eli Sawyer has earned the CTE Student of the Month award at the Region 14 Applied Technology Center for April 2023. He was nominated by his Manufacturing instructor, Michael Scaramellino, for excelling in all the career readiness skills but especially for being a program leader, building positive relationships, and always coming prepared with the mindset to learn and be successful.
Mr. Scaramellino shared that “Eli arrives from Conant each and every morning ready to go. He is the type of student that arrives on time, prepared and ready to work in the shop on what he needs to do. He is always on task, uses the tools and equipment properly and safely. He has been a pleasure to teach and is a model student for the Manufacturing classes.”
The Kiwanis Club of Peterborough has generously decided to honor our CTE Students of the Month this year with a $150 award, $100 of which goes directly to the student and $50 which will be donated to a nonprofit of the student’s choice. In addition, Eli has also earned the right to park in the reserved CTE Student of the Month parking space for the month of May.
Congratulations to the recipients of the April Cougar CARES Awards!
Faculty and students can nominate one student each month for a Cougar CARES Award. The goal is to recognize and celebrate students who demonstrate the actions described in the ConVal C.A.R.E.S. (Community, Adaptability, Respect, Engagement, and/or Safety) behavior matrix.
Congratulations to sophomore Dylan Farrell who took home the prize for Best Model at this year's NH chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIANH) Excellence in Architecture Design Awards. The awards ceremony took place at Keene State College on April 20.
Over the past six weeks, Farrell and junior Elizabeth Petrov researched viable terrain and the design of historic buildings while developing their skills on a computer program called Revit by Autodesk. Revit is a building information modeling software tool for architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers, designers and contractors.
After the presentation of their designs on April 20, Farrell was awarded first place in Model Design. This accomplishment is even more laudable because both these students demonstrated independent learning and perseverance by working on their own time or during ConVal's TASC block.
Normally, preparation and actual design work for the competition take place during a student's engineering course. However, this year was different as engineering courses were reprioritized in order to provide coverage in the science department. The work of both of these students is therefore an accomplishment that is to be specially celebrated.
The AIANH Excellence in Architecture Awards Program was instituted in 1983 for the purpose of providing public and professional recognition for architectural projects of design excellence. Each entry is judged by an assembled group of professional peers based on the following criteria: overall design excellence including aesthetics, clarity, creativity, appropriate functionality, sustainability, building performance, and appropriateness with regard to fulfilling the client's program.
