[post_content] => Jostens, the leading producer of yearbooks and student-created content, today announced that ConVal High School’s yearbook program has been named a 2016 Jostens’ National Yearbook Program of Excellence.
The National Yearbook Program of Excellence recognizes engaging yearbooks that reflect a broad representation of the student body while helping students develop 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, and information and communication technologies (ICT) literacy.
The ConVal High School award winning yearbook program is led by Amanda Bastoni and Karrie Mitschmyer.
Jostens’ National Yearbook Program of Excellence Awards are presented twice a year, in spring and in fall for yearbooks delivered during the school year. The Award was presented to the ConVal High School yearbook program for achieving the defined criteria in each of three following categories: creating an inclusive yearbook, generating school engagement, and successfully managing the yearbook creation process.
“Yearbooks connect students’ hearts and minds to the school story, school year experiences, and the community to memorialize moments that matter. Jostens is proud to recognize yearbook staffs and advisers who create engaging yearbooks that tell the story of their school communities,” said Murad Velani, chief operating officer at Jostens.
"We understand that a great yearbook program does not just happen, and we are dedicated to helping schools, yearbook advisers and students to strengthen their programs by providing state of the art tools, resources and best practices that support the development and creation of award-winning yearbooks.”
The ConVal High School yearbook program will receive a plaque to display in the yearbook area and a banner to display in school so the entire school community will be aware of the outstanding achievement.

[post_content] => The German Club emerged victorious from the Iron Chef Competition which was held on Monday, May 16, at South Meadow School.
Every year, the members of the French, German, and Spanish Clubs at ConVal High School engage in a friendly competition that involves cooking dishes from their respective foreign countries and serving them to a panel of judges. The criteria include taste, presentation, authenticity of recipe, and ingenious use of the secret ingredient. Each table is decorated with articles reminiscent of the target country and decor is an important component of the evaluation process.
The German Club won this year with a menu selection that included an hors d'oeuvre of Beet and Brie Salad, a second course of Pretzel Bites, Bratwurst, and Sauerkraut, a third course of Traditional Fondue, followed by Austrian Kaiserschmarr'n as dessert. Each of the courses was accompanied by appropriate drink choices: German mineral water, German-style cider, and tea.
Congratulations to all participants who made this year's Iron Chef Competition a particularly exquisite culinary delight!

ConVal students joined hundreds of other high school editors, writers, and artists from across New England. The students listened to speakers and attended workshops on a variety of topics including photojournalism, ethics, law, and marketing.
This year, for the first time, ConVal also entered pieces into the NESPA annual competition. The Link was awarded "Highest Honors" for overall publication of a school magazine and Annie Henry's piece "A Juice Cleanse for the Brain" was given a "Special Achievement" award for non-fiction.
ConVal competed against division II schools (800-1200 students) from across New England.

[post_content] => Two of Karen Fabianski's Engineering and Design students received honors at the American Institute of Architects New Hampshire Chapter (AIANH) 2016 Design Contest.
The contest was based on the premise that the 35th America’s Cup will be held in Portsmouth, NH. Students were asked to design a Youth Education Pavilion, a highly visible structure to tell the story of the race, the history of sailing, and to introduce local youth to sailing. They were given program parameters and a site plan of Odiorne Point to work with.
KJ Ammon took 2nd place for Best Model describing the Design Solution. Hannah Cheneau received a Jurors’ Citation for Overall Design Idea and Model Quality.
The educational objectives of the design competition were to:
• increase awareness of the relationships between space, human scale and function.
• gain experience in recognizing the various challenges in planning and designing indoor and outdoor spaces for specific uses.
• exercise analytical abilities and creativity in solving the problems defined by the competition participant
• practice communicating the planning and design ideas utilizing scale drawings and models
In addition, a fundamental goal of this building was to embrace sustainability principles in order to reduce the overall impact of the building in the environment. The design had to incorporate innovative green building strategies such as:
• increased energy efficiency through the use of natural day lighting and smart shading systems
• water efficiency through the use of low flow fixtures
• the use of renewable energy to help achieve Net Zero energy consumption
• materials which will reduce consumption, pollution and waste
• materials that will be durable and do not require special maintenance.
Local architect Len Pagano assisted Ms. Fabianski with project. The models crafted by Ammon and Cheneau are currently on display in the ConVal Library/Learning Commons.

[post_content] => Congratulations to Hannah Henderson on being awarded first honorable mention in the portrait category in the 2016 Jostens Photo Contest.
Henderson's photo "Caught in the Moment" was taken in north Peterborough and is used to visually frame the senior section of 2016 ConVal yearbook. This is the first time that ConVal's yearbook photography has received an award from Jostens.
"This year, we had over 8,000 entries and only 80 total photos were selected," said Corey LaRoche, a representative for Jostens Printing and Publishing. "I am so proud of the work you all do."
Congratulations, Hannah!
On a related note, now is a good time to buy your 2016 ConVal yearbook. There are less than 100 copies left and sales will be closing Monday, May 9th.

[post_content] => NH All State is a yearly festival run by NHMEA (NH Music Educators Association). Each year they hold auditions for students to participate in the festival.
Almost every state in our nation holds an All State Festival or similar experience for their students. Some bigger states, like Texas, do this regionally since there are so many students who participate in music.
For New Hampshire, students from schools all over the state prepare various repertoire and technical studies on their instrument of choice and attend an adjudicated audition where the top scorers are chosen to fulfill four ensembles (Band, Orchestra, Mixed Choir, Treble Choir).
Once chosen based on their audition, students prepare the music independently and with their teachers until they attend the weekend festival to work with distinguished guest conductors and present a concert.
Pictured are: Thomas Pratt (class of 2016, tenor voice), Cam Ibach (class of 2017, bass voice), Luke Wilson (class of 2017, bass voice), Bridget Grady (class of 2017, soprano voice), Ursula Kratzenberg (class of 2016, violin), Beck Lorimer (class of 2017, percussion). Of special note, Lorimer received the top percussion score in the state for his audition.
