Students Learn How To Score A Film

Students in Ms. Morin’s Music in Film class use Garage Band to write original musical scoring for one of four available video clips. They formed the basis of a BBC Film Scoring Contest which was originally held in 2012. This particular clip is from the 1993 stop-motion animated short film “Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers,” created and directed by Nick Park at Aardman Animations.

The only audio left on these film clips is the dialogue, so students not only compose the new score, they are also responsible for finding (on soundbible.com) or creating sound effects and mixing them into their score. Their final projects (here are version 1 and version 2) reveal how students interpreted the same visual text differently, and how the combination of music and sound effects creates distinctive moods for the viewer.
