Students Pitch In To Control Invasive Plant Species

Robin Croteau’s biology students work with Ken Cloutier’s science classes and John Benjamin of the Harris Center for Conservation Education to remove invasive plants from the ConVal High School campus.

This is the fifth year that the identification of invasive plant species has been part of the biology program, but only the second in which students have actively worked, after developing campus management plans with the district groundskeeping staff, to remove the invasives from the deciduous and coniferous forest areas that surround ConVal.

The development of the management plans offered students the opportunity to demonstrate proficiency in the areas of problem-solving and collaboration, as well as increase their awareness and applied knowledge of the local flora.
