Each month faculty and students can nominate one student from each class for a Cougar C.A.R.E.S. Award. The goal is to recognize and celebrate students who embody ConVal C.A.R.E.S. (Community, Adaptability, Respect, Engagement, and/or Safety).
Congratulations to senior Maddy Faber, the recipient of this year’s Jack Ford Memorial Scholar Athlete Award for Division II.
"This award is given to only one individual from each division," said basketball coach Kevin Proctor. "I believe this to be the greatest honor a high school basketball player can be awarded in the state of New Hampshire."
The Jack Ford Memorial Scholar Athlete Award balances high-level basketball performance with excellence in academic achievement as well as exemplary citizenship and community service. Coaches nominate players from their team and winners are voted on by the coaches at each division level.
The award is named for John “Jack” Ford who coached at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, NH, starting in 1974. His coaching career was highlighted by winning the Class L State Championship in 1992.

Senior Girls Lacrosse player Sarah Holdredge has been named this week’s WMUR Hometown Hero. Sarah’s story aired on WMUR Channel 9 on Thursday, March 24.
In the broadcast, ConVal Lacrosse coach Derek Sorbello described the unique qualities that Holdredge possesses. As the team's star goalie, Sorbello said, Holdredge "is one of the best unicorns we have had."
In addition to maintaining a 3.4 GPA and being active in multiple sports — including all-state in both field hockey and lacrosse —, Sarah also is very engaged in community service. She is a volunteer member in the Francestown Fire Department and plans to become a firefighter paramedic. "I go on firefighting and EMS calls and try to help out whenever I can," Holdredge said.
A particular passion of hers is the involvement with young female athletes. Holdredge volunteers as a youth lacrosse coach and is a ski instructor on Crotched Mountain during the winter months.
After graduating from ConVal, Holdregde plans to play field hockey and lacrosse for Colby Sawyer College in New London.
Congratulations, Sarah, on being named a WMUR Hometown Hero!
The New Hampshire School Library Media Association is pleased to announce that ConVal High School's Rachael Bowman has been awarded the 2022 School Librarian of the Year award. This award recognizes ongoing excellence in school librarianship and leadership in the school library community, at local, regional, and/or state levels.
Bowman will be recognized at the NHSLMA 2022 Conference at the Grappone Center in Concord on March 25. In addition to being honored at the NHSLMA conference, she will also be recognized at the Annual NH Excellence in Education Awards Celebration, also known as the “ED”ies, on Saturday, June 4.
Bowman would like to thank NHSLMA for this recognition and is honored to accept the award on behalf of ConVal High School's Library, Integration, and Technology Services (LITS) team. She is grateful for the support of the students, staff, and administration of ConVal School District.
Bowman would like to recognize one person in particular, her co-librarian Ashley Jones, without whom she would not be in a position to accept this award. Together, Bowman and Jones were recognized by the Annual NH Excellence in Education Awards for the best-in-the-state library program at ConVal Regional High School in 2019.
Junior Daniel McCall competed at the statewide level in the American Legion Oratorical Contest on March 12. The contest was held at St. Anselm College in Machester and McCall placed second in a field of six contestants.
Known as the "constitutional speech contest," the American Legion Oratorical Contest seeks to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation among high school students for the essential principles of government under the U.S. Constitution.
McCall's main 5-minute oration was on the Elastic Clause. His second, 3-minute speech was on the Third Amendment ("No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law") where he spoke about how the amendment addresses the intersection between private and public life.
Congratulations to Ella Phillips who has been chosen as the February CTE Student of the Month.
Phillips was nominated by her Careers in Education teacher Sarah Grossi who shared that "Ella is an extremely strong and dedicated student. She is doing an outstanding job in her practicum placement in first grade. She is currently leading our co-curricular Educators Rising fundraiser for Ending 68 Hours of Hunger. She has recently volunteered to help with our ATC tours. Ella is a wonderful ambassador for our TEML program and our school."
Phillips clearly enjoys teaching: "In my Careers in Education 2 class, I am working in a first grade classroom at Antrim Elementary School, collaborating with the teacher and one of my peers to plan and teach lessons."
In her spare time, Phillips enjoys pursuing athletic activities and the outdoors: "I run cross-country and track and field. I have received three coaches awards: Two of them were for excellence, one of these was called the Brigid Kosgei Award [in honor of the Kenyan champion of the London Marathon]. The third award was called a SISU award which was for determination, resilience, and courage. Along with running, I love to do anything outdoors for example, hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, and biking."
As Mrs. Grossi had noted, Phillips is someone who thinks about making contribution to the community: "I try to take on leadership roles when I can. A couple examples of this include being a member of the National Honors Society and of the National Technical Honors Society." In the summer, she will be a cabin leader at Camp Takodah, the same camp that she attended for a few years, so her focus in community service is on giving back and paying it forward.
Ella's future plans involve majoring in biology and minoring in marine biology in college in hopes of possibly going onto become a genetic counselor: "Throughout my college experience, I hope to join clubs, volunteer through community service, take part in a few internships, and step outside my comfort zone."
Attending college will also facilitate her dreams to travel. "I want to study abroad as much as I can," Phillips said. "One day, I hope to own a 1971 Volkswagen bus and travel long distances with it!" Those who know Phillips have no doubt that she will achieve all of her ambitions.
Congratulations, Ella, on this special honor!

ConVal junior Daniel McCall garnered first place in the District 2 American Legion Oratorical Contest which was held at Post #23 in Milford on Saturday, February 26.
McCall won with a pair of successful speeches, the first on the "Elastic Clause" (also known as the "Necessary and Proper Clause") in the U.S. Constitution and the second on an assigned topic, which for McCall was the 8th Amendment which prohibits cruel and unusual punishments.
The mission of the American Legion Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. Speaking subjects must be on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution.
The competition is held in two rounds. The first set of speeches involves orations on a constitutional topic and are eight to ten minutes long. In addition, contestants prepare four three- to five-minute speeches on four different constitutional amendments and must be ready to speak on all of them. One of these assigned topic speeches is then chosen for presentation at the contest.
With his win at the District 2 American Legion Oratorical Contest, McCall advances to the state-level contest which will be held at St. Anselm College in Manchester.
