[post_content] => Two ConVal students and Social Studies teacher Greg Leonard have been selected to attend the inauguration ceremonies for President Trump in January. The selection came as a result of their participation in a summer learning program devoted to "The Presidency and the Press," organized by the Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication at Franklin Pierce University. Fitzwater was White House Press Secretary for six years under presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.
"Professor Kristen Nevious [of Franklin Pierce] contacted me yesterday to officially announce that Michelle Jarest and Jason Frank have been selected to attend the Presidential inaugural on January 20th as part of the student press corps. I've also been asked to attend as a chaperone and advisor," explained Leonard.
"We will be leaving Franklin Pierce University on the morning of January 17th and travel by train from Boston to Washington DC. We will be covering a number of events leading up to the inaugural ceremony on Friday, January 20th. We will then be returning on the 21st."
The attendance of the presidential inauguration is a first for ConVal students.
"This is terrific news and speaks to the talents of our students and to Mr. Leonard's leadership and willingness to go above and beyond," commented Dean of Faculty Gib West. "This honor is further evidence that ConVal students successfully pursue strategies to seek learning opportunities that are beyond the classroom."

[post_content] => Robin Croteau's Spring 2016 Oceanography class has won the HonorableMention Award in the film category of the 2016 Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Student Contest. The entire class collaborated on an animated short film, entitled "Hello Me, Goodbye Sea," which contained all-original illustrations and text.
As Anne Leslie of the Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Program organization wrote in an email, "Your submission was amazing and stood out from the more than 1,200 high school entries from around the world. You should be incredibly proud of your accomplishment!" Bow Seat works to inspire the next generation of ocean caretakers through education and engagement with the arts, science, and advocacy.
As HonorableMention winners, the members of the Oceanography class are the recipients of a cash award. Congratulations all!

[post_content] => The ConVal Regional High School Counseling Department has announced that sophomores Matthew Smith, Savannah Kersbergen, and Lindsey Carey were selected to represent ConVal at the 2017 Hugh O’Brian Leadership Conference in May.
The HOBY Conference is a weekend-long program held at the St. Methodios Center in Contoocook, and will host sophomore student leaders from across New Hampshire.
Smith, Kersbergen, and Carey were three of twenty-four sophomores nominated by school staff for the conference. Fourteen candidates were interviewed by the committee.
Matthew Smith is the son of Steve and Diane Smith of Peterborough. He is a member of the ConVal Cross Country teams where he received the Coaches Award in 2016. Smith has a blue belt in Tae-Kwon-Do and has earned leadership and spirit awards in the sport. As a freshmen, Smith received outstanding achievement awards for his work in Algebra 1, Spanish 2, and Health and Wellness.
Savannah Kersbergen is the daughter of Kristopher and Jessica Wells-Kersbergen of Peterborough. She is a member of ConVal’s Ocean Bowl team, Varsity Volleyball team, and the History Club. As a freshmen, Kersbergen was the recipient of the History Student of the Year Award in 2016.
Lindsey Carey is the daughter of Steve and Lisa Carey of Greenfield. She was one of two freshmen to make the Varsity Basketball team last year, and currently is the goalie for the Varsity Soccer Team. Lindsey is active in the Student Athletic Leadership Team (SALT). Outside of ConVal, Lindsey volunteers for her church and serves as a camp counselor.
The seminar provides an opportunity for high school sophomores to recognize their potential talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders of the future. An estimated 7,500 sophomores attend the seminars in all 50 states and Canada each year. At the end of each seminar a boy and girl from each location is selected to attend the World Leadership Congress.
HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences.

ConVal High School announced today that senior Caroline Riffle has been named a Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.
A Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by the school counseling director to this talented senior.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2017 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Caroline is the daughter of Gary and Monica Riffle of Peterborough.
Today officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. ConVal senior Sarah R. Johnson of Temple is a Semifinalist for the 2017 program.
Sarah and other semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.
The National Merit® Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The program does not measure the quality or effectiveness of education within a school, system, or state.
About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
National Merit Scholarship winners of 2017 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 323,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
Michael Zrzavy has been selected for this year’s Evans-Reilly Award that is given annually by the Monadnock Rotary Club in memory of Rotarians David Reilly and William Evans.
The purpose of this award is to recognize and honor a ConVal High School Junior who demonstrates outstanding integrity and work ethic, an enthusiastic personality, positive leadership, above average scholarship, and an unusually strong commitment to school and community service.
Zrzavy is the daily "voice of ConVal" as well as an accomplished musician, performer and actor. He is a section leader of the Concert Band and is Drum Major and President of the ConVal Band. He has played roles in many ConVal theatre productions, is an 11-star National Honor Thespian, and serves as Technical Director of the ConVal Drama Club.
In addition, Zrzavy is an outstanding scholar. He is a member of the National German Honor Society Delta Phi Alpha and the recipient of the Gold Award for Distinguished Achievement on the National German Exam. He is a member of the ConVal National Ocean Science Bowl (NOSB) A Team and the Chemistry Club. He was a winner of the 2016 Edith Bird Bass Essay Contest and was recognized with a Harvard Book Award.
Zrzavy is a former class President and served as the Class Marshall for the graduating Class of 2016. In addition, he has worked as an Ambassador and Facilitator for the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation which recognized him this year with the Outstanding Volunteer Award. He is also a long-time member of the Youth Advisory Board of Breathe New Hampshire, the New Chapter of the American Lung Association.
