[post_content] => The ConVal Regional High School Counseling Department has announced that sophomores Matthew Smith, Savannah Kersbergen, and Lindsey Carey were selected to represent ConVal at the 2017 Hugh O’Brian Leadership Conference in May.

The HOBY Conference is a weekend-long program held at the St. Methodios Center in Contoocook, and will host sophomore student leaders from across New Hampshire.

Smith, Kersbergen, and Carey were three of twenty-four sophomores nominated by school staff for the conference. Fourteen candidates were interviewed by the committee.

Matthew Smith is the son of Steve and Diane Smith of Peterborough. He is a member of the ConVal Cross Country teams where he received the Coaches Award in 2016. Smith has a blue belt in Tae-Kwon-Do and has earned leadership and spirit awards in the sport. As a freshmen, Smith received outstanding achievement awards for his work in Algebra 1, Spanish 2, and Health and Wellness.

Savannah Kersbergen is the daughter of Kristopher and Jessica Wells-Kersbergen of Peterborough. She is a member of ConVal’s Ocean Bowl team, Varsity Volleyball team, and the History Club. As a freshmen, Kersbergen was the recipient of the History Student of the Year Award in 2016.

Lindsey Carey is the daughter of Steve and Lisa Carey of Greenfield. She was one of two freshmen to make the Varsity Basketball team last year, and currently is the goalie for the Varsity Soccer Team. Lindsey is active in the Student Athletic Leadership Team (SALT). Outside of ConVal, Lindsey volunteers for her church and serves as a camp counselor.

The seminar provides an opportunity for high school sophomores to recognize their potential talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders of the future. An estimated 7,500 sophomores attend the seminars in all 50 states and Canada each year. ConVal High School announced today that senior Caroline Riffle has been named a Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

A Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by the school counseling director to this talented senior.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2017 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Caroline is the daughter of Gary and Monica Riffle of Peterborough.

Today officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. ConVal senior Sarah R. Johnson of Temple is a Semifinalist for the 2017 program.

Sarah and other semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

The National Merit® Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The program does not measure the quality or effectiveness of education within a school, system, or state.

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2017 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 323,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

He was recognized on June 2nd at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Ceremony on Perelman Stage in Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Bacon won for his photograph "The Egg," a picture that was composed as a class assignment in Ms. Bastoni's Digital Photography class exploring Rembrandt lighting options. In addition to Bacon's Gold Medal, photo instructor Amanda Bastoni was recognized with a medal as his teacher. Bacon's national gold medal award means that a nationwide jury selected his picture as being in the top 1% of this year's submissions to Scholastic Arts. Only the top 2,500 works in the country earn National Medals. Awards were given in Carnegie Hall to students from all fifty states, the Dominican Republic, and US students living abroad. Each year, Scholastic Arts partners with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country to bring the Awards to local communities. Teens in grades 7 through 12 apply in 29 categories of art and writing. Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
