[post_content] => ConVal staff members Emily Daniels and Paul Barnes were awarded the Chairman's Award by School Board Chairman Butch Estey at a ConVal School Board Meeting recently.
Emily Daniels is a student assistance counselor at ConVal and was recognized for her work with the ConVal Substance Abuse Task Force. She developed a diverse group of members representing stakeholders from the high school, middle school, elementary school, physicians, parents, students, police officers, administrators, and MCH. Under Emily's leadership, the Task Force went through a comprehensive and structured strategic planning process. Emily spent a great deal of time building trust and a common language within the group, which allowed the team to have candid conversations about a difficult issue. By the end of the school year, the Task Force completed a complete analysis of our current practices, policies, and procedures. After a two day retreat in the summer, the Task Force committed to a strategic plan that focuses on three important issues; Public Perception, Education, and Policy.
Paul Barnes is a custodian at the high school. He is awesome at his job! Anytime you ask him for help he is right there and never complains. He is helpful and considerate and goes out of his way to help students and staff. Paul is an active member of our ConVal community and is present at sporting events, faculty events, and funness outings. He is positive and friendly and has a great sense of humor. Paul takes pride in his work at ConVal and works with everyone to keep our building clean and safe.

[post_content] => ConVal High School science and oceanography teacher Ken Cloutier received a Sponsor Recognition Award of $750 in the Ocean Awareness Student Contest, which announced its High School winners today. Over 20 of Cloutier’s students submitted to the contest this year, in addition to the 14 students he sponsored last year too.
“I like to find opportunities for my students to combine art and science” says Cloutier. “I included this contest as a project in my Oceanography classes. It challenged my students to think outside the box and demonstrate science knowledge in a creative way.”
This year, the contest prompted students to consider “Our Oceans, Our Plastic” to direct attention to the growing international problem of ocean plastic pollution. While the contest has run for the last 4 years – focusing on issues such as right whale conservation and sea bird restoration – this is the first year that the contest has been open to Middle School Students. Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs, the international ocean conservation non-profit that hosts the contest each year, plans to give out over $50,000 to the winners of the middle and high school divisions of the contest.
Submissions ranged from essays and stories exploring the cause of plastic pollution to sculptures and dresses crafted completely out of discarded beach plastics. The artists and their work will be featured in real-world exhibition and distribution projects that will be coordinated with Bow Seat’s international partners over the coming year. Each project will aim to spread awareness of plastic pollution and ocean conservation to the public by engaging the public with the teen’s art, poetry, writing, and films.
“Jacques Cousteau said that people protect what they love,” says contest founder Linda Cabot. “While science and technology are critical to understanding our planet and deciding what to do next, alone they aren’t enough to inspire long-term cultural shifts. Humans aren’t purely rational creatures. That’s why need to convey creative narratives like stories, poetry, film, and visual art – they engage our emotions, our heart. We need to use our heads and our hearts so that we can protect this planet that we love.”
The High School winners of the contest can be viewed online, and the 2016 Contest will open in November and run until next June. Visit fromthebowseat.org to see all the winners and more information.

[post_content] => American Idol top 5 finalist Sam Woolf and the Como Brothers will be performing at ConVal High School in the "Void" on October 17 at 2pm as a fundraiser for the"FilltheVoid" campaign. There's more to learn about Sam Woolf's music and career online; the band even shot a special ConVal concert promo.
The "Fill The Void" campaign is working to design and build a multi-purpose arts facility that will serve as a performing arts center, instructional space and regional venue for arts events and exhibitions. The facility will be located in the space where it was originally intended to be built — between the gymnasium and the classrooms. It will include an art exhibition space, and will have instructional space available to the school and community. As a vibrant community center for the exploration and display of visual and performing arts, this venue will offer an array of programs that can provide learning opportunities for students and all citizen.
For more on the Visual and Performing Arts Center, watch this video and explore this website.

[post_content] => Cartoonist, musician, and educator Marek Bennett visits ConVal High School and presents a TASC Talk on cartooning and graphic novels.
Bennett's work includes the local history webcomic LIVE FREE AND DRAW!, the graphic novel travel memoir SLOVAKIA: Fall in the Heart of Europe, numerous community-specific mini-comics projects (such as serving as the Official Cartoonist of New Hampshire’s Weeks Act Centennial), the long-running Xeric Award-winning weekly newspaper strip “Mimi’s Doughnuts,” and others.
Bennett’s educational programs incorporate sequential narrative cartooning techniques & music into community-based projects that explore and develop the participants’ sense of history, culture, and individual & collective identities. Artists of all ages, backgrounds, abilities discover their own unique capacities for storytelling, performance, and communication as they contribute to projects and presentations in workshop- and discussion-based events. Through focused webcomics like LIVE FREE AND DRAW! and COFFEE+DUMPLING+KOMIKS, Marek shares his own experiences of travel, research, and community with a wider audience of readers and contributors. More on Marek Bennet's work can be found on his website.
Mr. Bennett's visit came as the result of a Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) project entitled "Making A Living | Making Art." The project was funded in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. The NHSCA is a state agency devoted to enhancing the quality of life in New Hampshire by stimulating economic growth through the arts, investing in the creativity of students, making the arts accessible to underserved populations, and preserving heritage arts.
