Dr. Vince Virga is a veterinarian, scientific writer, and conservation activist. A three-time Macdowell fellow currently in residence at the Colony, Virga gave a TASC talk on his specialty of animal behavior and wildlife conservation.
Virga presented a comprehensive slideshow with photographs and video clips, explaining how animal care guidelines in zoological parks and wildlife preserves have evolved over the past three decades.
The original philosophy was centered on how the animal is best displayed for the convenience of visitors, with little regard to animal welfare beyond the safety and physical health of the animal.
More current thinking in zoological park construction involves the consultation of animal behavior specialists who help ensure that the artificial habitats mimic more closely conditions in the wild and incorporate design principles that take into consideration stimulation through play and the animal's natural exploratory behavior.
Virga ended his presentation with an appeal to students to become more actively involved in wildlife conservation. According to his research, there are multiple hotspots around the world where endangered species are disappearing more rapidly than previously known.
The key factors in this worrisome development are habitat encroachment and climate change. Virga's concern is that people are insufficiently alarmed about this issue, even though the warning signs point to a clear and present danger of permanent loss of wildlife.
Before taking student questions, Virga ended on a positive note by sharing two examples of activists in their late teens and early twenties making a significant difference in the wildlife conservation movement.

Von Manteuffel is a designer and a member of the German Design Museum Foundation.
He gave a presentation on the German Bauhaus style, its cultural roots in the Weimar Republic, and the "form follows function" design principles that Bauhaus architects like Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe later applied to the construction of skyscrapers in the United States.
After the presentation, students were invited to explore Bauhaus design principles to construct a chair using only paper, paperclips, and plastic straws as raw materials. Their various designs were later presented to the class, in German, and cataloged by von Manteuffel.
The “Discover Design—Discover Bauhaus” workshop is part of the Year of German-American Friendship. This initiative is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, implemented by the Goethe Institut, and supported by the Federation of German Industries (BDI).

Boice earned the award for his commitment to preserving Peterborough's history. He is a volunteer for the Peterborough Historical Society and is a colonial interpreter. As a colonial interpreter, he dresses in traditional colonial clothing and demonstrating cooking techniques from the 17th and 18th centuries.
A self-taught computer programmer, Boice took his love of history into the digital age, creating Newpast: Peterborough 1886. This interactive game allows the user to explore Peterborough as it was in 1886 as compared to how it is now.
Boice's amazing immersive experience is currently being beta-tested with elementary school children and the Monadnock Center for History and Culture. He previously shared his creation at a Celebration of Learning event at ConVal Regional High School (see Taking Learning To A Whole New Level: Student Re-Creates Late 19th Century Peterborough In VR).

The MTSS-B framework has been shown to improve student engagement, create school climates and cultures that are positive and inclusive of all students, and improve student academic and behavioral outcomes.
This interactive, hands-on training was provided by the University of New Hampshire for school-level leadership teams to prepare for the implementation of an evidence-based multi-tiered system of support framework.
Participants focused on how to establish Tier 1 “universal” systems. School teams learned how to organize their learning community to include diverse school and community voice, create a positive school-wide system, align multiple efforts and resources and how to create a coherent, consistent, and positive environment for all students.

The students' participation was a first in the history of the club which is open to juniors and seniors enrolled in the Region 14 Teacher Education Program. They competed in a blend of individual and team events in categories such as public speaking, ethical dilemma, creative lecture, job interview skills, and children's literature.
Three ConVal students — senior Leah Stone, junior Tracie Dailey, and junior Molly Reed — were selected for their creativity, commitment, and professionalism to move on to the national Educator Rising competition which will be held in Dallas, Texas, from June 22-25, 2019. Congratulations on qualifying for the national conference!
The Educators Rising organization is a division of Phi Delta Kappa International (PDK), a professional organization that supports students who are interested in education-related careers. PDK helps guide young students on a path to becoming accomplished teachers, beginning in high school and extending through college into the profession.

The participating schools were: Boston Latin School, Boston, MA; ConVal Regional High School, Peterborough, NH; Cony High School, Augusta, ME; and Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, Sudbury, MA. Each school put forth two teams. ConVal sent Team "Dudelsack" (German for "bagpipe"), consisting of Grace Christensen, Alexis Cleary, Bronwyn Tyler-Wall, and Finn Wegmueller; Team "Die Bernsteins" was represented by Lenny Romard, Eddie Sulborski, and Greta Topping. For the competition, the teams workshopped to write rap texts about a given topic, practiced their performance, improved their pronunciation and stage presence, and got inspiration from experts - all in German, of course! The event was judged by a four-person jury comprised of representatives from the Goethe Institute, the German Consulate, the Berklee School of Music, and the German School in Boston, and Team "Dudelsack" emerged as the winner. As part of their first prize, their rap song will be professionally recorded in the weeks to come. The Goethe Institut is a non-profit German cultural association that operates 159 institutes worldwide with the mission to promote the study of the German language abroad and to encourage international cultural exchanges.
