In her blog post, "Ms. G," as she is known at ConVal, explains how she uses PBS resources, such as Art21 and The Art Assignment, to share with her students the works of contemporary artists. Not only does online access to these remarkable resources make it easier to bring far away resources into the classroom without the cost and complications of a field trip, what Ms. G appreciates that "artists are shown in the context of their exhibition spaces and in their studios. You get an intimate look at their creative process." The blog post explains in detail which artists she has featured in her instructional practice — Kiki Smith, Robyn O'Neill, Janine Antoni, Nancy Spero, Lenka Clayton, Elizabeth Murray, to name but a few — and how their works impacted both the students' understanding of art and their self-image as art makers. She sees it as her mission as an art teacher "to help students find their way into art; I wholeheartedly believe that art is for everyone. Many of my students come to high school somewhat estranged from artmaking after a middle school loss of confidence and my role is to help them find their way back to art. My students are encouraged when they see that there are myriad ways to be a maker." Goldthwaite-Gagne was named a PBS Digital Innovator representing the state of New Hampshire in 2017. The students are able to see the organism, organ systems, organs, and tissues of various specimens and make comparisons. Students dissected crustaceans (crayfish) on Wednesday and echinoderms (sea stars) on Thursday. The students were asked to take photos of certain structures during the dissection to complete a small project once the dissections are complete. “I was really excited to do this dissection. It can be difficult to find what we’re looking for but I feel that it’s been a good experience. We’ve been identifying a lot of the structures and learning about their functions,” said sophomore Emma Anderson. She also discussed how the dissections related to what was being learned in class. “Sciences is absolutely my favorite class.” The new lab space that was completed in September 2018 is especially accommodating for dissections. Students have lab table space to break into groups and have adequate working space. Cleaning up is quick and easy as there are numerous sinks, paper towel dispensers, and soap for students. Anna Muncy observed, “It is a science teacher’s dream to see students be able to clean up their workspace quickly and well. Aside from the educational and time benefits, it is also a safety benefit as space is properly cleaned of chemicals.” [post_title] => Students Dissect Starfish In Science Class [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => students-dissect-starfish-science-class-20190321 [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2019-03-21 16:07:31 [post_modified_gmt] => 2019-03-21 20:07:31 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://cvhs.convalsd.net/?p=10284 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [2] => WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 10279 [post_author] => 9 [post_date] => 2019-03-21 14:11:50 [post_date_gmt] => 2019-03-21 18:11:50 [post_content] => At the meeting of the Mascenic School Board Monday evening, a sharing agreement was signed that will have Mascenic rejoin the Region 14 Applied Technology Center (ATC), located at ConVal Regional High School. One class (Ms. Vanat and Mr. Manni) had been selected to argue in favor of the position, the other class (Mrs. Holcombe and Mr. Mudrick) argued in opposition to the perspective. The debate followed a strict format with opening statements from both sides, alternating comments of agreement and disagreement, and formal closing statements. All speakers had to make a claim or rebuttal argument, provide evidence for their position, and explain their reasoning. Teams were allowed to ask clarifying questions and, for prescribed periods of time, could conference with their teammates and teachers. Throughout, the debate was passionate but civil. In the end, students got to score who had prepared and presented the better arguments for their position. Judging from the success of this first debate, there will be other opportunities for students to hone their debating and public speaking skills.
