Students were grouped into cooperative teams of 3 to 4 each and then competed against each other and against the clock to solve questions involving research, organization, and collaboration. Each successful solution to a puzzle unlocked tasks of higher levels of difficulty until the entire sequence was solved. Student engagement was high and all teams solved the challenges successfully. Students learn how to successfully disassemble and reassemble personal computers while identifying the function and operation of individual components such as disk drives, video controllers, power supplies, and motherboards. Identifying exactly which hardware component is failing is the first step towards successful problem-solving. This initial decision determines which repair strategy is most appropriate. In this case, it appears that the laptop's hard drive has malfunctioned. What is yet undetermined is whether this happened on account of a physical issue, such as overheating, power surge, or mechanical failure, or if the malfunction is due to a really bad virus that rendered the hard disk unusable. Diagnosis: More testing needs to be done before a repair can be effected. The assignment is to build a robot that can pick up radioactive debris from a nuclear power plant explosion. The robot is joystick-controlled, and the debris must be placed in a bucket. To make the assignment even more realistic, there is a 3-minute time limit for picking up the debris. In this photograph, a 9th-grade robotics student works on the robot's drivetrain. Hassan and Rosenworcel were interested in how technology and Internet connectivity made a difference in the instructional and learning practices at the high school level. Superintendent Kimberly Saunders and Principal Gib West guided the classroom tour. The group first visited Greg Leonard's Social Studies classroom where they interacted with students working in teams, researching non-profit philanthropic organizations. This research is being conducted in collaboration with the YES program on social issues at the Mariposa Museum of World Cultures in Peterborough. Next on the tour was Krystal Morin's Music Lab where students are currently working with film clips from existing movies, both animated films and regular movies, to compose and rescore soundtracks. The student-created compositions are added back to the films and further augmented with sound effects. The final products show how the mood and overall impact of a film can change just with the manipulation of its acoustic ambiance. In Mr. Wickham's room, the string ensemble demonstrated the many ways in which technology has changed music instruction. Students can access music scores online, rescore existing arrangements on their Chromebooks to fit their instrument, use the tablets to read the music while playing without having to flip paper copies, and practice playing music by ear with online video resources in preparation for a live performance. Students demonstrated both self-scored music and traditional fiddle playing for the visitors. The tour concluded in the ConVal Library Learning Commons where Senator Hassan and Commissioner Rosenworcel interacted with students who were engaged in taking Virtual Learning Academy Charter School (VLACS) classes online. These classes provide important opportunities for students who cannot fit certain classes into their existing schedules or seek to extend their learning with self-paced courses, in addition to their other classes. Since the newly deployed Chromebooks allow students to participate in VLACS courses at school and at home, they are an example of anytime, anywhere learning in the blended learning environment that Conval Regional High School provides for its students. The tour concluded with Senator Hassan and Commissioner Rosenworcel receiving some ConVal High School windbreakers and knit caps. In Mr. Wickham's String Ensemble class, for example, the Chromebooks are used by students to arrange their own music for violin, viola, bass, and guitar. They take shared thematic material, pick a leitmotif, melody, or orchestral portion, and adapt it so they that the resulting score can be played on their instrument of choice. "The Chromebooks have already made a big difference in my classroom," said Mr. Wickham. "The on-demand access to technology allows students to switch from their instrument to their computers and back again, which makes the students' compositional feedback cycle instantaneous. Students can try out new musical ideas and prototype musical drafts — with actual playtime built in — before progressing to the next section of the assignment." "The other advantage is that students can take their work home and don't have to wait to come back to a lab the next day. The learning resources are always with them." Anywhere, anytime learning, where students remain actively engaged with their assignments, is one of the long-term goals of the blended learning environment at ConVal High School.
