[post_content] => On the last day before the holiday break, students, teachers, and staff met in the cafeteria for a last-minute opportunity to take pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, portrayed by Tyler Mudrick and Ashley Jones.
Some of the attendees, such as English teacher Cathy Riley, hammed it up and had a funny, extra-long gift list which elicited quite a lot of laughter from bystanders.
Chemistry teacher Brock Lambert showed up to the Ugly Holiday Sweater gathering with a black Bah Humbug cap and a sweater that showed the chemical formula for μ-trioxidanediidodihydrogen (trioxidane).
There was also a popular cookie swap that was organized by students.

[post_content] => For weeks, ConVal Librarian Ashley Jones had left an illuminated, three-dimensional Tetris puzzle for students and staff to solve.
Since the puzzle came without instructions, no one knew if the final shape would be a pyramid, a square or a rectangle, or if the puzzle was solvable at all.
Many unsuccessful attempts came close but did not succeed — until Coach Paul Landau strolled by on his lunch break and put the geometric shapes into a perfect rectangle.
"The funny thing is, I didn't play that much Tetris as a kid," Coach Landau chuckled.

[post_content] => On Thursday, December 21 — the last day before holiday break —, get in the holiday spirit in a fun way and flaunt those ugly holiday sweaters that you normally would be too embarrassed to wear in public.
In what has become a lighthearted ConVal holiday tradition, students, faculty, and staff will sport their ugly sweaters and pose for a joint picture in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre during TASC.
So go find that "unique" sweater in the back of your closet and bring it to school. Chances are, you won’t be the only one wearing that special Rudolph sweater that someone made for you ten years ago.
Don’t have an ugly sweater? Make one of your own! Bedazzle an old or thrifted sweater, add embroidered holiday motifs and some sequins, and voila, you are ready for ConVal's celebration of Ugly Holiday Sweater Day!

[post_content] => The ConVal Library and Learning Commons has become a popular gathering place for students before and after school.
In addition to providing time to conduct research, do homework, and meet for group projects as well as other class assignments, students benefit from opportunities for independent reading while they wait for after-school clubs, co-curriculars, and sports activities.
From time to time, students also get to enjoy doing puzzles which are provided by the librarians. Once the puzzles are completed, Ashley Jones and Rachael Bowman mount and display them as wall decorations. The latest addition was a library-themed puzzle with the title "Wish Upon a Book."

[post_content] => Students in the classes of Frau Concannon and Frau Hodgdon delivered their recitations of German poetry before an audience of peers and volunteer judges.
Students had to remember a range of preselected pieces of poetry in German Levels 1-4, from short 8-line poems for young German audiences all the way to the difficult opening soliloquy spoken by Faust in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust: Der Tragödie erster Teil.
The judges included principal Gib West, several members of the English Department, and two ConVal alumns, Ian McKay (Class of 2012) who spent last year as a Fulbright scholar in Berlin, Germany, and Michelle Russell (Class of 2009) who has extensive experience in German at the college level.
The Foreign Language Poetry Recitation Contest is held annually at Hanover High School in early December. The competition gathers language students in French, German, Latin, and Spanish from a wide range of high schools to recite poems in their target language before a panel of judges and an audience of peers and teachers.
This year the competition will take place on Tuesday, December 12. Students will compete at different language levels throughout the morning. The event will culminate in the HHS Auditorium around 11:30 a.m. for the announcement of the winners.

[post_content] => Students in Greg Leonard's Social Studies class are currently exploring the Industrial Revolution, its root in technological innovations, its economic impact, as well as its social and political effects.
As a way to combine online research skills with 21st century communication skills, students collaborated on the creation of a website devoted to the subject. In addition to print materials and links curated by Leonard in Google Classroom in advance of the assignment, students used their district-issued Chromebooks to conduct independent research, evaluate sources, synthesize information, and write text for web pages on a shared website.
"It is important that we provide a venue for students to practice these essential skills in the classroom," Leonard said. "These digital research and communication skills are what students will need in their futures, whether in college, career, or military service."
"All too often, computers are being viewed as sources of entertainment through gaming or video streaming," Leonard continued. "We seek to model the purposeful use of electronic devices as instruments of learning. We want to open up students to the endless opportunities to become content creators, not just content consumers."
The online service that was used for the creation of the website is Google Sites, part of the Google suite for Education that includes the learning management system Google Classroom as well as the productivity components Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides.

[post_content] => Last Tuesday afternoon, several ConVal staff members attended the classroom portion of a blended learning class in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and general First Aid, offered by the Red Cross.
After completing a 2 1/2 hr online portion on their own, the members of the certification cohort met with ConVal High School nurses Judi Bernardi and Gretchen Shippee for additional, in-person learning and demonstration of skills.
The staff members learned about techniques for CPR, AED, and First Aid and how to properly address conditions such as bleeding, choking, allergic reactions, asthma, and stroke. They also learned protocols for how non-health care professionals should communicate with nurses and emergency personnel while awaiting professional medical assessment.
The members of the certification group were: Alisha Davis, Kat Foecking, Colleen Harding, Mary Hopgood, Jason Lambert, Kevin Morneault, Moira Milne, Krystal Morin, and Nate Townsend. These staff members are now certified for the next two years in adult and child CPR, AED, and First Aid. According to Gretchen Shippee, additional certification opportunities will be offered on a monthly basis in the future.

[post_content] => Transitioning a traditional school library program and services to a library learning commons model is supported by the ConVal School District. Research indicates that the development of flexible learning environments, designed to provide interactive and collaborative opportunities and experiences, is essential to address the contemporary needs of school communities.
This was the focus of a pre-conference workshop at the Christa McAuliffe Technology Conference (CMTC) in Manchester on November 27. Well-known Learning Commons expert Dr. David Loertscher addressed the critical elements of the transition from library to learning commons. He was joined by participants from several NH schools, including librarians and technology integration specialists from the ConVal School District, who have already begun to incorporate learning common concepts and best practices.
Included as part of the workshop was a guided tour of the Shapiro Library/Wolak Library Learning Commons at Southern New Hampshire University SNHU.
