Congratulations to Careers in Education teacher Sarah Grossi whose article "Pedagogies of Practice in a Pandemic" was published in the April 2021 issue of Techniques.
The article was based, in part, on Grossi's presentation at the Career Tech Virtual Vision 2020 Conference which was held in December and was organized by the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE).
Grossi collaborated on the article with R. Lennon Audrain, a Graduate Research Assistant and Ph.D. student in Educational Policy & Evaluation in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University.
Techniques is the official magazine of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) and features articles from educators and CTE stakeholders designed to inspire reflection as well as action.
Congratulations to Fletcher Maggs who is the recipient of a Scholastic Arts "Best of Show" Award. Scholastic Arts is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens, and the "Best of Show" Award in Photography is a first for a ConVal High School student.
Maggs is a junior at ConVal High School and a completer of the Region 14 Applied Technology Center (ATC) Photo/Video program. He has been selected to be a member of the National Technology Honor Society and will be inducted this spring. In addition to discovering and perfecting his own photographic style, Maggs will serve as a teaching assistant for the ATC Digital Photo/Video program through an Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) in his senior year. His long-term goal is to study photography and video production in college.
Scholastic Arts is an arts support organization that dates back to 1923. Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual arts, some of whom are themselves past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
Congratulations to ConVal senior Aria Frehner who has been nominated as a U.S. Presidential Scholar.
“Aria is an exemplary student who has shown a strong commitment to her education,” Principal McKillop said. “We are thrilled to see her nominated for this top honor and could not be prouder of her for this accomplishment.”
Frehner is a top member of her class and has taken several honors and AP courses at ConVal Regional High School. She is a member of the German Club and the National Honor Society and has taken part in several plays and musicals over the last four years.
“Being nominated for the Presidential Scholars Program was a big surprise, but I am very honored. Even if I don't make the final cut, I am proud of my accomplishments and thankful to everyone who helped me get here,” Frehner said.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.

On Saturday, February 27, 2021, the ConVal Ocean Bowl team placed 2nd as a school in the Nor’easter Bowl, a regional National Science Ocean Bowl (NOSB) competition.
The Nor’easter Bowl is an annual, regional contest of the National Ocean Bowl (NOSB) that was created by the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. The competition tests high school students’ knowledge of marine sciences, including marine biology; chemical, physical, and biological oceanography; marine geology and geophysics; marine engineering; and marine policy.
The competition was held virtually this year and students have been practicing all year via Zoom. Hopefully, in the future, the Oceanography course can resume making the ConVal Ocean Bowl team even more competitive!
Congratulations to the team members Catilin Beal, Lydia Cleveland, Abraham Dreher, Violet Fletcher, Leah Krason, Eva McCullough, Gabriella Oja, Avery Pope, Conor Simmons, Mary Visingard!
Congratulations to the following students for winning awards in the National German Exam, Level 2:
Silver - Eva McCullough
Bronze - Lydia Cleveland
Achievement - Donny Sweeney
"Considering all of the changes to our schedule the last twelve months, this is an amazing accomplishment," said ConVal High School German teacher Frau Hodgdon.
The National German Exam is administered each year to over 20,000 high school students of German. The Exam, now in its 61st year, provides individual diagnostic feedback, rewards students through an extensive regional and national prize program, and creates a sense of accomplishment.
The Level 2 Exam is administered in the winter so qualifying students in the 90th percentile can apply for the AATG/PAD Study Trip Awards, a four-week study trip program to Germany.
