To celebrate "Fußball" (soccer), the Goethe Institut organizes an annual "Bundesliga Total!" contest, in which students of German from around the nation demonstrate their soccer knowledge in a variety of contests by being matched against one another in their knowledge of the Bundesliga.
At the eastern regional finals in Washington, DC, this past weekend, ConVal's "Bundesliga Total!" duo Finn Wegmüller and Anna Gombas took third place in a field of 25 teams.

[post_content] => Congratulations to ConVal Regional High School for winning first place in the New England-wide "Theaterfest" contest.
The Theaterfest was organized by the Department of German and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. It featured dramatic presentations in German by middle, high school and college students from New England.
ConVal's winning entry was a 15-minute short play entitled "Zapping" which portrays a person who is compulsively switching between cable channels. The resulting collision of dialogues between advice on a cooking show and commentaries on two different sports channels leads to puns, double entendres, and humorous word plays.
The German drama team consisted of Alexis Cleary, Rosie Crooker, Aria Frehner, Ben Kriebel, Grace Phillips, Greta Topping, and Finn Wegmueller. Congratulations, all, on this prestigious achievement!

[post_content] => This past week, Schuyler Michalak competed in Alaska representing Team New England at the Junior National Nordic Championships. Just being selected to this event is a huge honor — only 15 girls from the five-state New England region were chosen to compete, and Michalak had earned this opportunity by placing in the top 15 in New England in U20/U18 combined division.
At at the Cross Country Junior Nationals in Anchorage, Michalak had top 20 finishes for all three of her individual events: she placed 19th in the 5k skate race, 9th in the classic sprints, 15th in the classic 10 k and 7th in the team relay skate. She also earned the official "All-American" designation after finishing among the top 10 in the nation in the Sprint Classic event.
Congratulations, Schuyler!

A special event on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm will honor the Scholastic Art and Writing Award winners and display their work in a gallery showing.
Each year, Scholastic Arts partners with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country to bring the Awards to local communities. Teens in grades 7 through 12 apply in 29 categories of art and writing.
Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

[post_content] => In a letter dated February 4, Nancye L. Hart and Charlotte Waddell of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) informed ConVal's Region 14 Applied Technology Center that its technology and engineering education program had been selected as the recipient of a 2019 Program Excellence Award.
"Having passed the review process," the letter by Hart and Waddell states in part, "your school’s technology and engineering education program is truly exemplary among other programs in your state, at your school’s level. You know more than anyone the tremendous amount of work and dedication that is required to design, maintain, and improve quality programs like yours."
"Primarily, your students are the ones who will have richer lives for having participated in your program," the statement continued. "Not many endeavors are more important than helping students become technologically literate and learn more about the world around them. Thank you for investing in your students!"
Mrs. Fabianski will receive the official recognition at the Program Excellence General Session of the 2019 ITEEA Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday, March 28, 2019. Please see the letter in its entirety by clicking here.
Congratulations, students and Mrs. Fabianski!

[post_content] => On Saturday, February 3, 2019 ConVal’s Ocean Bowl Team took third place in the 2019 Nor’easter Bowl that was held at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine.
The competition consists of five round-robin competition matches to start the day. The second half of the day is a single elimination tournament where the winning teams continue to advance and compete. The Conval Ocean Bowl team made it the semi-finals, where they lost to York who ended up coming in second place.
The team members included: Savannah Kersbergen (Captain), Ryan Beal, Bronwyn Tyler-Wall, Isabel Dreher, Avery Pope, and Sandra MacKay coached by Griffen Fletcher (math/physics teacher) and Anna Muncy (science teacher).
The team had a few obstacles to overcome, but they immediately focused and gave it their full effort. The team won two round-robins and lost two round-robins. When it became single elimination, they played well and defeat the number one seed (Falmouth A) to advance to the semi-finals.
This year, the Nor’Easter Bowl’s committee dedicated the Team Sportsmanship Award to Conval’s very own Jon Manley. Jon Manley was a previous coach for the Conval Ocean Bowl team taking the first teams to the Nor’easter Bowl and NOSB Finals. Jon Manley coached the team when Mr. Fletcher was a student on the team, inspiring Mr. Fletcher to carry on ConVal's and Mr. Manley’s legacy.
The Nor’easter Bowl is an annual, regional competition of the National Ocean Bowl (NOSB). It was created by the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. First place continues to the National Ocean Science Bowl Competition held in Washington D.C. this year.
The 2019 competition is sponsored by its co-sponsors, the University of Maine School of Marine Sciences, University of New Hampshire/NH Sea Grant, and the Gulf of Maine Marine Education Association. It is additionally sponsored by NOAA, Deerbrook Charitable Trust, American Honda Foundation, NASA, Eastman Foundation, Lockheed Martin, Shell, Schwab Charitable Fund, Conservation Fund, The Curtis & Edith Munson Foundation, Sharon & Wayne Sterberger, BOEM, IEEE Ocean Engineering Society, Marine Technology Society, National Marine Educators Association, and Leave Only Bubbles Marine Sciences Curriculum Supplies. There are numerous other funding sources, institutions providing volunteers, and institutions providing field trip prizes.

The Goethe Institut is a non-profit German cultural association that operates 159 institutes worldwide with the mission to promote the study of the German language abroad and to encourage international cultural exchanges. Around 246,000 people take part in Goethe Institute activities every year.
