[post_content] => The ConVal Regional High School Counseling Department has announced that sophomores Haley Davis, Liam Gilligan, and Elizabeth Guptill were selected to represent ConVal at the 2018 Hugh O’Brian Leadership Conference in May. The HOBY Conference is a weekend-long program held at the St. Methodios Center in Contoocook, and will host sophomore student leaders from across New Hampshire.
Davis, Gilligan, and Guptill were three of twenty-five sophomores nominated by school staff for the conference. Twelve candidates were interviewed by the committee.
Haley Davis is the daughter of Jeff and Ronda Davis of Antrim. She is a member of the varsity volleyball team and earned an award for as a JV player last year. Davis is also a member of the ConVal unified basketball team.
Liam Gilligan is the son of Terry and Kimberly Gilligan of Dublin. He is a member of the ConVal baseball and cross country teams, and is currently a member of the Student Athletic Leadership Team. He is the recipient of the Dick Beardsley Award for cross country and the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce ACE Award. Outside of ConVal, Gilligan is a National Ski Patrol Member, referee for youth basketball and umpire for youth baseball.
Elizabeth Guptill is the daughter of Michael and Miranda Quinn of Peterborough. She is co-captain of the ConVal volleyball team and a drum major for the CVHS marching band. Guptill also participates in managing stage productions for the drama department.
The seminar provides an opportunity for high school sophomores to recognize their potential talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders of the future. An estimated 7,500 sophomores attend the seminars in all 50 states and Canada each year. At the end of each seminar, one male and one female student from each location are selected to attend the World Leadership Congress.
HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. HOBYprograms provide youth selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences.

[post_content] => With slide photographs of a crater in Iceland, the Wolfgangsee (Lake Wolfgang) and other impressive scenic photos from Austria and Germany beside him, Nick Batty, a senior at ConVal High School recently shared his travel experiences to Europe. The talk took place in the Stephenson Memorial Library in Greenfield and was also attended by Cindi Hodgdon, Nick's German teacher for the last three years.
Batty recounted his first travel experiences abroad, which took place in April of this year. His group of about two dozen ConVal students started in Iceland and concluded their roundtrip journey in Munich, after stops in Salzburg, Hallein, and Vienna. The trip was part of the ongoing exchange program with the Akademische Gymnasium, a high school in Salzburg which was founded in 1617 and celebrates its 300th anniversary this year. The school's exchange with ConVal is now in its 19th year.
Apart from gaining international travel experience, Batty was able to apply his German language skills to real-life situations in Germany and Austria where he stayed with a host family. "I'm not fluent," Batty said. "But if you dropped me into a German-speaking country for a year, I could survive." For more about Batty's presentation, see this article in the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript.

[post_content] => When ConVal Yearbook advisor Amanda Bastoni opened a package of promotional materials from yearbook publisher Jostens recently, she was in for a big surprise. "This poster arrived in the 'back to school' packet that Jostens sends to high schools across the country," Bastoni explained. "And, guess what? The photo on the poster was taken by a ConVal grad, of a ConVal grad."
The photo, entitled “Caught in the Moment,” had been taken in north Peterborough and introduced the senior section of the 2016 ConVal yearbook. "Hannah Henderson, a career and technical education (CTE) program completer, photographed Brad Carter, another CTE program completer, and now that photo is hanging in hallways in every state in the USA. Thousands of high school students are seeing this!" Bastoni noted excitedly.
"What an absolute honor for ConVal Regional High School to have Jostens choose one of their photos out of the thousands of entries it receives each year for our photo competition, the largest yearbook photography competition in the World," said Corey LaRoche, a representative for Jostens Printing and Publishing. "And, then to have it be featured in our national marketing campaign that is sent to our customers throughout the entire United States is truly outstanding."
Congratulations to all involved for demonstrating the excellence of ConVal's photography program to a national audience!

[post_content] => ConVal Regional High School's Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2017 took place on June 17, 2017.
After the processional and the national anthem, which was sung by the senior members of Select Choir, Principal Gib West and Class President Kara Ammon gave welcoming speeches.
Valedictorian Sarah Johnson and Co-Salutatorians Caroline Riffle and Sawyer Cawthern each delivered addresses to the Class of '17. Meaghan Farrell was the selected student speaker, followed by the performance of the senior song "Teach Your Children" by Senior Chorus members.
Following the announcement of the Faculty and Staff Award winner by English teachers Mark Holding and Liz Moore, Social Studies teacher Eric Bowman gave a thought-provoking and exceptionally well-received Message to Seniors on the importance of sincerity in our lives. Bowman's speech drew a standing ovation by the graduates and the assembled audience.

[post_content] => At the 24th Annual Excellence in Education (EDies) Awards on June 10, ConVal's German teacher Cindi Hodgdon was presented with the World Language Teacher of the Year Award by Lauren Percy, Miss New Hampshire 2017.
The award was given by the New Hampshire Association of World Languages. The Association recognizes truly outstanding language educators, not only for their contribution to the teaching of a foreign language but also for their work to advance their profession. With her proven record of excellence as a classroom teacher and her strong involvement in organizing workshops, German immersion days, and delivering presentations at professional meetings, Cindi Hodgdon was chosen as the most qualified recipient for the award.
In her typically humble manner, Frau Hodgdon kept her acceptance speech short and to the point: "Guten Abend! I’m honored to be among so many talented teachers tonight. Thank you NHAWLT for this award. Multiple people have inspired me to become the teacher I am today. Thanks to all who have collaborated in this world language journey, especially: my family, my parents, Peter in Nashua, Laura in Concord, and Sara, Robin, Liz and Helfried at Conval. We truly are a village working to share our passion for languages with our students. Danke."
Frau Hodgdon, the many students whom you have taught — those whom you inspired to pick German as an unusual choice of foreign language study; those who achieved Bundestag scholarship and other travel exchanges; and those who continued to study German in college and became Fulbright scholars in Germany —, they all salute you tonight on your grand achievement. Congratulations!

Senior Isaac Bacon, whose photograph “The Egg” won a Scholastic National Gold Key award last year and who received state-level Scholastic Gold and Silver awards this year, will have his photographs displayed.
Isaac, who was also recently recognized by Congresswoman Annie Kuster at the Congressional Art Competition in Concord, credits photography for opening doors for him, allowing him to meet new people and develop an awareness of the world around him through a “different lens.”
A reception will be held on Friday, June 9, from 5:00-7:00pm. All are welcome to attend.
