Jillian has been producing origami works since the age of 5. She started with the well-known crane and quickly mastered the traditional art of paper folding, creating ornate boxes, flowers and birds. Jillian says, “Making animals out of a single flat piece of paper, creating their definitive shapes, has always been fun. I’ve also been inspired by how origami is integrated into science, from the folds of a parachute to the layering of DNA in modern medicine.” Most recently Jillian’s work has expanded to Golden Venture Folding with hundreds of papers per piece and the intricacies of Kusudama origami, the precursor of modular origami. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, May 13, from 5 – 7 pm. Light refreshments will be served. In conjunction with her show, Jillian also plans to teach a workshop at the Community Center on Saturday, May 20, from 10 - 11:30 am. "PBS Digital Innovators set the bar for thoughtful technology integration in the classroom. These PreK-12 educators are not defined by the gadgets they use, but by the unique way they approach education. Their bold and enthusiastic perspective sets them apart as changemakers, and unlocks new worlds for their students." Ms. G's acceptance letter read in part: “I am thrilled to share that you have been selected as one of the 2017 PBS Digital Innovators. While we received hundreds of applications from highly qualified educators like you, your submission stood out as the strongest from your state and you have been selected to represent your state as a PBS Digital Innovator.” PBS Digital Innovators attend the PBS Digital Innovators Summit which is held this year in San Antonio, June 24 - 26, 2017. This three-day, all expenses-covered conference allows attendees to connect with fellow innovators and learn from renowned education experts. The Summit also includes a day pass to the ISTE Conference. The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the use of technology to aid in learning of K-12 students. Aho is finishing up the third and final level in Graphic Design, one of the Applied Technology Center programs at ConVal. Aho's instructor Andy Bills commented: “Ingrid has been producing wonderfully creative concepts all year and this design for the festival shows off a level of competence that is truly impressive. I am very impressed with the sophistication of both the illustration and typography in her design. Ingrid makes my job rewarding.” The festival poster that Aho designed was one of 33 posters submitted for the annual Children and the Arts poster contest which Andy Bills created as a class project. This community-based project starts with the students meeting with representatives of the festival who come in to meet the students and is conducted as a interview in which the students are assessed for their ability to “ask the right questions” and get all the pertinent information needed to design and produce a poster. The next step is conceptual, as each student submits pencil drawings that represent concepts for individual designs. Ultimately the students are encouraged to collaborate and exchange both concepts and specific illustrative content that may lead to the winning choice. These posters are a wonderful medium to show off the students' creative talent, craftsmanship, technique mastery, as well as technical expertise and will serve as portfolio pieces for each student. Bailey is a student of German teacher Cindi Hodgdon. Kirkpatrick was selected as a national winner after scoring in the 95th percentile on the Level 4 2017 National German Exam for High School Students sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). Over 20,000 students participated in the program. After qualifying with a high score on the National German Exam, she submitted responses to several short essay questions in German and in English and was then interviewed by a committee comprised of high school teachers and college professors of German. Kirkparick is one of forty‐four outstanding German students selected from across the US to receive the award. The study trip includes round‐trip air transportation to Germany from New York, a homestay in a host family, and excursions to places of cultural and historical significance. The study trip, now in its 57th year, is made possible through a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany. “This year’s prize winners are some of the finest students in the US,” said Keith Cothrun, Executive Director of the AATG. “The prize is a great reward for excellence in learning German—and the best way to better get to know a fascinating language and culture through first-hand experiences living with a German family and attending school.” Founded in 1926, the AATG represents German teachers at all levels of instruction. The AATG is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of the teaching of language, literature and culture of the German‐speaking countries.
