[post_content] => Junior Isaac Bacon is now officially a national Scholastic Arts Gold Medal winner. He was recognized on June 2nd at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Ceremony on Perelman Stage in Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Bacon won for his photograph "The Egg," a picture that was composed as a class assignment in Ms. Bastoni's Digital Photography class exploring Rembrandt lighting options. In addition to Bacon's Gold Medal, photo instructor Amanda Bastoni was recognized with a medal as his teacher.
Bacon's national gold medal award means that a nationwide jury selected his picture as being in the top 1% of this year's submissions to Scholastic Arts. Only the top 2,500 works in the country earn National Medals. Awards were given in Carnegie Hall to students from all fifty states, the Dominican Republic, and US students living abroad.
Each year, Scholastic Arts partners with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country to bring the Awards to local communities. Teens in grades 7 through 12 apply in 29 categories of art and writing.
Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

[post_content] => On Wednesday night May 25, eleven students competed in the final round to win a donation for the charity of their choice through the Youth Empowered through Service (YES) program.
YES is a partnership between the Mariposa Museum and the ConVal Social Studies Department. Every quarter, students research various charities. They explore their mission, research their cost structure and administrative overhead, and track their respective records in service delivery. The students then explore which of the charities is likely to benefit the most from the fixed amount of money — $3,000 — that they are competing for.
Student presenters compete against each other for a spot in the finals which is held annually in May before a panel of judges. This year, the finalists were Ivy Battaglia, , Emma Brown, Chris Charbonneau, Anthony Clark, Hannah Garfinkle, Arielle Garner, Bailey Guinn, Maryssa Williams, and Taryn Wing. As judges this year served:
Steve Bartsch, Dean of Students at ConVal Regional High School;
Gina Goff, Director of Community Involvement, C & S Wholesale Grocers, Keene; and
Warren R. Muir, Senior Fellow, Granite Research Institute, and Founder of the Cyprus Friendship Project.
The winning student team consisted of Delaney Beaudoin and Anna Lyons. Their presentation was in support of the Amara Legal Center, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping people victimized by the sex trafficking industry in the Washington, D.C. Metro area. On behalf of the team, Beaudoin and Lyons accepted the winning check from Mariposa Museum Director Karla Hostetler.

[post_content] => Members of the ConVal Envirothon Team have been learning and preparing all year for the annual Envirothon Competition.
This year, NH Competition Day was held on Tuesday, May 24, at the McLane Audubon Center in Concord. The ConVal team placed first in the wildlife category, second in the current environmental issues category (emphasis: the invasive species Emerald Ash Borer), and came in third overall!
The members of the ConVal Team are: Lawton Fagiano, Astrid Kipka, Morgaine O'Connor, Kaitlyn Giza, Tyler LeBlanc. The team is being coached by Dana Wood. The Envirothon is a hands-on problem solving competition throughout the United States and Canada challenging students in five areas:
soils/land use,
aquatic ecology,
forestry,
wildlife and
current environmental issues.
The mission of the Envirothon is to "develop knowledgeable skilled and dedicated citizens who have an understanding of natural resources and are willing and prepared to work towards achieving and maintaining a balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment".
Led by the team web designer, Lawton Fagiano, the students produced and published an interactive website and blog that can be found at nhinvasives.info. It is an impressive site!

[post_content] => Film fans from across the state flocked to Concord on Saturday, May 21, to view this year’s best student films at the 2016 New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival (NHHSSFF).
Twenty-seven short films, documentaries, and public service announcements (PSAs) had made it to the finals, including three entries from ConVal High School students. This marked the first year that ConVal participated in the festival.
In the end, freshman Olivia Mullins emerged as a Jury Award finalist for her 6-minute, 39-second documentary titled “I’m with the Band,” a film short about what it means to be a member of the ConVal Band. Mullins' prize package included software and an Adobe Creative Cloud membership.
For more on Mullins and her motivation to do the movie, see this Monadnock Ledger Transcript article and this article in the Keene Sentinel.
Congratulations, Olivia!

[post_content] => ConVal Social Studies Teacher Chris Heider is the Recipient of the 2016 Rotary Teacher of the Year Award.
Heider was nominated by his students. He was recognized for the comprehensive depth of his knowledge in this field, for being a rigorous teacher with high expectations, for being caring and compassionate, and for instilling a desire to learn in his students. Fellow teachers praised Heider for being "a role model for all of us" and for continuously pursuing "the craft [of teaching] with passion and a deepening knowledge of content." Heider was also recognized as a "teacher who embodies the principles of 21st century learning" (see video below).
The Rotary Teacher of the Year is chosen annually from among the 225 full-time teachers in the ConVal School District. Three finalists from each of the three school levels (elementary, middle, and high school) are selected, and one of those teachers from each school level is recognized as “Outstanding Teacher.” Finally, a single teacher from the finalists is named “Teacher of the Year.”
Congratulations, Mr. Heider!

[post_content] => Students in two of Ms. Hodgdon's German classes celebrated their runner-up placement in the "Bundesliga Total!" contest. The competition was organized by the Goethe Institut, Germany's worldwide cultural institute, in collaboration with German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
Every month over the course of the soccer season, twenty international teams watched a short video of the highlights of a Bundesliga game (“Match of the Month”) and answered questions about the game and the video. Teams received points for all correct answers. After each round, the updated standings were posted on the Goethe Institut's Step into German website.
The team with the highest point total at the end of the season was declared the championship team. ConVal's team — the "New Hampshire Faultiere" — lost by a single point to a team from Marietta, Georgia.
The teams with the highest scores received Bundesliga team jerseys and autographs of Bundesliga players; all participating teams were awarded soccer-related prizes.
Cindi Hodgdon's students received an official, autographed German soccer jersey by Bayer Leverkusen star player Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez. Congratulations to all!
