CONVAL DRAMA PRESENTS
Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins, Jr.
A Musical based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film Original Music and Lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman Book by Julian Fellowes New Songs and Additional Music and Lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe Co-Created by Cameron Mackintosh
Adopted by iTheatrics under the supervision of Timothy Allen McDonald
Directed by Rachel Diemler, Brian Moore, & Elizabeth Moore
ConVal Drama presents “Mary Poppins, Jr. ” on Thursday, August 2nd at 6 pm, and Friday, August 3rd at 2 pm and 6 pm in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre at ConVal High School, Peterborough. Tickets are available at cvlht.com and at the door for $5. “Mary Poppins Jr.” is presented in association with ConVal Summer Academy and features the fifth annual collaboration between ConVal High School, Great Brook Middle School and South Meadow Middle School. Students coming into 5th-12th grades participated in a four week course to put together this 60-minute version of the Broadway production. Originally published by P.L. Travers in 1934, the 1964 movie version garnered 13 Academy Award Nominations, the most for any Disney film. Adapted for the stage in 2004, the stage version melds the delightfully catchy tunes of the film with additional stories from the books. Classic songs such as “Jolly Holiday,” “Spoonful of Sugar,” and the Academy Award Winning “Chim Chim Cher-ee” are joined by several new additions from the Broadway production like “Practically Perfect” and “Anything Can Happen.” This fresh and magical presentation is just the ticket for family fun on a warm summer afternoon or evening. ConVal District students performing in “Mary Poppins, Jr.” are: Alexis Cleary, Katorina Keenan, and Mary Quintanilha of Bennington, Brynn Frosch of Antrim, Haley Serafine of Francestown, Alanna Batty of Greenfield, Abby Theberge of Hancock, Clara Christensen, Grace Christensen, Miranda Craig, Alissa Cutting, Chloe Griggs, Cheyenne Heinselman, Liliana Juarez, Gabrielle Klaessig, Daniel McCall, Mackenzie Mullins, Sean Roberts, and Inaya Vaidya of Peterborough, and Paulina Allen of Temple. Josh Ellis, Miranda Ellis, Ruthana Ellis, and Avery Swasey of Peterborough, and Ryan Jackson, Petra McLay, and Priscilla St. Pierre of Antrim are designing and implementing all technical elements. Former ConVal students Cassie Cutting ’15 (music and choreography) and Michael Zrzavy ’17 (lighting, sound, sets), both of Peterborough, are assisting as student mentors. The students' presentations ranged from the effect of saltwater on Gummi bears and the importance of adding salt to cookies to the conductive properties of salts and electrolytes enabling low-voltage transmission. Other projects addressed the negative effects that salts have on wildlife, especially snails, by causing dehydration, the differing densities of a water column depending on salt content, the inner workings of a lava lamp using oil, water, and salt, and a clever way to separate salt from pepper by using a statically charged comb. All student experiments were solidly researched and well presented in the target language. The students with the two winning entries at this world language science fair each received a $10 Amazon gift card. Congratulations to all students in the two classes who combined science knowledge and German skills in such an impressive manner!
