[post_content] => At the Commencement Exercises on June 17, Social Studies teacher Eric Bowman delivered an Address to Seniors entitled "What Matters?".
Bowman, who was selected by the graduating students to be their faculty speaker, encouraged students to do away with cynicism and detachment in interpersonal relations and to rediscover their potential for caring: "I think we have learned how not to care, how not to commit, how to say things don’t really matter. Our words and conventions often have no meaning. It’s easy to be insincere. It’s the ultimate cop out—avoid pain and emotion by simply not caring about anything."
"Since the 1990s (the decade in which you were born)," Bowman continued, "we have done a good job of teaching you to challenge tradition, to not give too much blind allegiance to what doesn’t matter—and I am all in favor of that. I celebrate critical thinking. But we haven’t done a great job of helping you to fill in what DOES matter. And thus, irony and insincerity rule the day."
Bowman argued that it is important to make the change now, on a momentous occasion such as graduation, and he wanted students to start engaging with one another on this very last day they shared at ConVal High School.
"So let’s practice by looking at today for just how special it is. Don’t be sarcastic about it. Don’t downplay it. Don’t say things you don’t mean and then hide behind the fact that you were just kidding."
"Look someone in the eye, feel that awkwardness until it melts away and you feel the warmth, and you see deep into someone else’s soul, for a change. When we do this, we will feel sad for all that we’re leaving behind, but we’ll also feel full joy for having experienced it at all."
"And if we start today, maybe we can all be part of a movement that lives life more deeply, more meaningfully. We can create a world where your word means something."
In the end, Bowman's Address to Seniors was met with a standing ovation by students, staff, board members, parents and relatives.
You can read a transcript of the entire speech here. Click here or on the image below to watch a video of Mr. Bowman delivering that address.

[post_content] => Art Club students and faculty from ConVal High School participated in the Mug-a-thon in early May to create as many mugs in one evening as they could.
Many mugs were made that day and some were created during class. Adding handles and decorating each mug was a collaborative process.
The finished mugs were sold with coffee or tea at this year's Broke Art Show during the 10th Thing in the Spring event. Over $500 was raised during this event and donated to the Fill the Void project.

[post_content] => Conval German I students Skyped with their pen-pals from the Sekundarschule Hundem-Lenne in Lennenstadt, near Cologne, Germany, this morning.
The students enjoyed learning about the German school, teenage life in Germany, and learning languages.
As this was their first attempt to communicate with native speakers in a foreign language, there was a good deal of initial confusion and laughter. But the overall experience of this initial exchange was very positive and the students can't wait to connect with their new German friends again soon!

[post_content] => When you travel to a foreign country, everything from greetings to simple transactions to ordering food can get lost in translation. One way to prepare for future travels abroad is to hone these skills at home, with visits to ethnic restaurants.
Spanish Club and German Club organize occasional "food crawls" in Manchester to learn more about other cultures by exploring their cuisine. Conversations not only entail menu choices and dialogues around ordering, they also touch on such units as colors, numbers, temperatures, animals, body parts, descriptive words, as well as vocabulary involving positioning and spatial descriptors (e.g. near the door, next to the table, etc.).
But most importantly, trying out your newly acquired language skills is fun — and these students truly enjoyed their experiences!

[post_content] => The ACES Project is a ConVal Substance Abuse Task Force sponsored project. It is a docudrama that has been in production for four months. The film will be used in the fall to educate the student body about the relationship between childhood adversity and substance abuse and addiction.
The ACES Project was based on research originally conducted by the Kaiser Permanente health care company and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The study found that childhood experiences, both positive and negative, have a tremendous impact on future violence victimization and perpetration, and lifelong health and opportunity.
As such, early experiences are an important public health issue. Much of the foundational research in this area has been referred to as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
