[post_content] => On Thursday evening, June 8, ConVal High School students shared their excitement about learning with more than 150 members of the public, including parents, SAU administration, and members of the ConVal School Board.
For more than two hours, students gave presentations and explained classroom projects, internships, and extended learning opportunities that involved project-based learning. They demonstrated excellence in subjects as diverse as art, entrepreneurship, CAD engineering, child growth and development, ceramics, film music scoring, and Physics & Calculus. Students curated content on distinct periods in American history and on the era of European exploration. They demonstrated a home-made Tesla coil and a robot designed to clean up nuclear waste. There was an exhibit on sauerkraut production and pickling techniques, complete with taste test samples, and a plant sale organized by students enrolled in the sustainable agriculture program.
Several students gave multiple presentations during the evening and a group of them, who had taken a 5th block class in Women's Studies, conducted a panel discussion in the library on the question: "What is society's view of the ideal woman?"
Below is the program of the evening, followed by a series of snapshots from the event.

[post_content] => On Friday, June 2, Student Council hosted the ConVal Film Festival in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre. Six student-made films were given their world premiere in front of an audience of Conval students, parents, and community members.
The film "This is Graphic Design" was the big winner, taking home best picture and best director for junior Adam Zett. Junior Tim LaPierre won Best Actor for his role as Mr. East in "This is Graphic Design." The Best Actress ribbon was awarded to Carly Storro for her powerful performance in "You Are Not Alone," a film directed by Storro and Dominique Wheeler.
Ryan Hoiriis did a professional job as the master of ceremonies.
Student Council offers a big thanks to Ms. Goldthwaite-Gagne's art students who made the award ribbons, and to Savron Graphics for doing all of the printing.

[post_content] => 8th Grade Orientation for Students and Parents brought a crowd into the ConVal Gymnasium on May 31st. Interim principal Gib West addressed the audience and stressed the importance of getting involved in the many activities that the high school offers to its students.
"Get involved and explore the opportunities before you," Mr. West said. "High school is all about finding out what you're good at and what you want to pursue further. Find your passion, and if we don't have something yet that fits your specific interest, we can make that happen for you."
Student speaker Michael Zrzavy referenced the importance of using this evening to make first contact with school counselors and the school nurses to make the transition from middle school as smooth as possible.
Zrzavy also briefly reviewed the rich athletic program at ConVal and the athletic teams that permit three-season participation with fall, winter, and spring sports.
He also noted the many co-curricular offerings that ConVal has in store for students.
Then it was off to the races for one of the student-led tours of ConVal.
The orientation ended around 8:00.
Thank you for coming, everyone, and we look forward to seeing you in August!

[post_content] => ConVal Drama presents "Amelia, Once More," directed by senior student Becket Gourlay.
"Amelia, Once More" examines the tension between an actress and the character she portrays. Night after night, sweet Shelly Preston performs the part of wicked Amelia in an off-Broadway hit.
The play’s success depends on her ability to step completely and realistically into her role. Now Shelly worries that the character is taking over her mind. She wants a night off to regain control over Amelia.
However, her unsympathetic director, Alphonse Crevansky, and the ambitious supporting actress, Laura Tontelli, unite to try to convince Shelly to perform. Tom, the leading man in the play, loves Shelly though he loathes Amelia. He admonishes Shelly to quit the play altogether, creating yet another force pulling on her.
The show dates are Thursday and Friday, May 18 and 19, at 7:00 pm. Admission is free but donations are welcome.
"Amelia, Once More" was written by Dave Muschell and is produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Service, Inc., Denver, Colorado. Picture source: pixabay.com/p-635258 (public domain license, labeled for reuse with modification).
