Congratulations to Leah Stone (Class of 2019) who won the job interview competition at the National Educators Rising Conference which was held in Dallas, Texas June 22-25, 2019.
Stone was one of 36 competitors in the job interview competition from around the country. She was required to write a cover letter, a resume based on her actual credentials, and participate in a mock interview. For a more comprehensive article on the event, see this story in the Keene Sentinel.
Three ConVal students — Leah Stone, junior Tracie Dailey, and junior Molly Reed — had qualified for the national conference of Educators Rising.
The Educators Rising organization is a division of Phi Delta Kappa International (PDK), a professional organization that supports students who are interested in education-related careers. PDK helps guide young students on a path to becoming accomplished teachers, beginning in high school and extending through college into the profession.
Congratulations to ATC teacher Sarah Grossi who has been selected as a NH Teacher of the Year finalist.
According to a June 20 letter by Lori Kincaid, Coordinator of the Teacher of the Year Program at the New Hampshire Department of Education, the next steps on the selection process will involve speeches written by the candidates.
"The speeches are to help us determine you public speaking skills," the letter explained. "As you are aware the Teacher of the Year serves as an ambassador for NH teachers and throughout the year you will have many speaking engagements in a variety of different venues."
Grossi will be judged on delivery, content, and overall impression as she delivers her 15-20 minute message "as a leader for educators across the state."
Good luck with the rest of the selection process as we look forward to seeing you chosen as the recipient of the Teacher of the Year honor!
The Peterborough Rotary Club presented five Paul Harris Fellows at the Passing of the Gavel Dinner held at the Hancock Inn in Hancock, NH.
Community members Dorothy Peterson, Norm Makechnie, Barbara Miller, Bob MacDonald, and ConVal school counselor JoAnn Fletcher were honored as Paul Harris Fellows. Fletcher was recognized for her service as the Interact advisor and for her support of several community service efforts with that group.
The Paul Harris Fellow was established in 1957 to express appreciation for the contribution to the humanitarian and educational programs of the Rotary Foundation.
Peterborough Rotary members work to improve our community through several projects, the most visible of which are Rotary‐Wilder Park and the downtown holiday decorations. The Rotarians also support other local organizations, such as the Boy Scouts and the Windy Row Learning Center.

The members of the New Hampshire Youth Poet Laureate Committee, a juried panel of New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, have selected Rachel Sturges as one of just two Youth Poets Laureate.
As the letter of appointment states in part: "We admired your poems, your presentation, and your thoughts ... We had an exceptionally strong list of candidates and because of this, we awarded the title of NHYPL to two young poets. The committee was thoroughly astounded by the poetry, support letters, and ideas shared by each of the candidates."
"Committee members are impressed by your excellent vision for the role, specifically utilizing social media; prior commitment to attending young writers conferences; and belief that poetry can help us understand our lives," the letter continued. "Your superior, crafted poetry contains imagery with emotion embodied in it, rather than simply talking about feelings; in other words, it looks outward from the self rather than simply at the self."
"The NH Youth Poets Laureate will serve in an honorary one year-position and act as ambassadors to heighten the visibility and value of poetry by and for young people in New Hampshire," the letter concluded.
Sturges' appointment will run from September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020. Falon Smith of Littleton High School in northern NH will also serve as one of the 2019-2020 NH Youth Poets Laureate.
Congratulations, Rachael, we are all excited by your appointment!

Congratulations to senior Jaclyn Clark who is the recipient of a Ruth & James Ewing Art Award.
The Ewing Arts Awards are named in honor of Ruth and James Ewing, who made many contributions to the local arts community through their stewardship of The Keene Sentinel and through personal philanthropy.
The awards are made in 10 categories: • Performing Arts • 2D Visual Arts • 3D Visual Arts • Literary Arts • Interdisciplinary Arts • Folk and Traditional Arts • Presenter of the Arts • Student Award • Lifetime Achievement • Excellence in Community Engagement
Winners are selected by a committee of local arts experts assembled by Arts Alive!, some of whom include past winners. These awards are subjective and not meant to reflect “the best” work done in this region, but rather to highlight excellence. An emphasis is also made on how an artist gives back to his or her profession or community.

On May 23, ConVal High School students who have qualified as New Hampshire Scholars took a field trip to the Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester to take in a Fisher Cats baseball game.
The New Hampshire Scholars Initiative is an effort by area business and school volunteers to encourage and motivate all high school students to complete a defined, rigorous academic course of study that prepares them for successful transition to college or university coursework or vocational and technical training necessary to enter today’s competitive job market.
New Hampshire Scholars are high school students who have pledged to complete the State Scholars Core Course of Study, a specific sequence of academic courses in English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language. The New Hampshire Scholars philosophy is based on the belief that it is better to be successful in an academically challenging course than to get a higher grade in an easier course.
